Rep. Rob Briley Busted for DUI and Fleeing the Scene

OMIG. Tennessee State Rep. Rob Briley has been charged with a DUI, evading arrest and violation of the implied consent law. Rob Briley is my state rep. He lives in my neighborhood. I've always viewed him as one of the most respectable and credible of our state lawmakers (and he probably still is). I've stood outside the polls and held signs with the Nashville Democrat. I am stunned.

KnoxNews: State Rep. Rob Briley, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, fled the scene of an accident in DeKalb County on Saturday and was arrested a short time later in Wilson County, after being chased by police for about 10 minutes, according to authorities.

The Nashville Democrat was arrested by the Watertown Police Department shortly before 6 p.m. Briley, 40, was booked at the Wilson County jail on charges of DUI, evading arrest and violation of the implied consent law.

According to warrants filed in Wilson County Sessions Court, Briley was clocked at 72 mph in a 45-mph zone. . .

Briley, the son of the late Nashville Mayor Beverly Briley, is one of the Legislature’s most powerful members. Besides chairing the Judiciary Committee, which deals with all bills involving the criminal justice system, he is a member of the House Ethics Committee and played a central role in shaping ethics legislation that was enacted by the General Assembly last year.

Update: Kleinheider reports that Rep. Glen Casada (R-Franklin) wasted no time before yelling off with Briley's head! In Casada's Baptist view, Democrats don't need no stinkin' day in court! But then unlike Briley, Casada's never been to law school.

Update #2: Rep. Briley was arrested again today "after a warrant was obtained accusing him of causing $1,500 damage to a patrol car by kicking the window." That was some alleged kick! If true, this man is not as mild mannered as he appears.

According to the latest report, Briley led the police on a 100-mile-an-hour chase and was arrested at gunpoint! "Naifeh said today that Briley suffers from alcoholism, was in treatment last fall and is preparing to enter treatment again. 'I will do everything I possibly can to help Rob Briley down the road to recovery,' he said. . . Naifeh said he was aware of 'naysayers' who were attempting to turn Briley’s situation to partisan advantage. 'I think that’s pretty lowlife. I have absolutely no use for those people,' said Naifeh."
