So, pro-life country-boy Fred Thompson has a history of working for an abortion rights group. The alleged pro-life conservative Fred Thompson worked as a lobbyist for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn. in the early 1990s, reports the LA Times.
It was Thompson's job to lobby the H. W. Bush Administration "to withdraw or relax" the abortion "gag rule" -- a rule that "barred abortion counseling at clinics that receive federal money."
When you are a "Gucci-wearing, Lincoln-driving, Perrier-drinking, Grey Poupon-spreading millionaire Washington special-interest lobbyist" who poses as a country lawyer driving a red pick-up truck -- in order to fool the people into voting for you -- well, there are bound to be a few surprises.
But pity the poor conservatives who have pinned all their last desperate hopes on Gucci-wearing Fred. Oh well, there's always John McCain.
Thompson spokesman Mark Corallo denies everything. He says Thompson has no "recollection of it."
Last month, Fox News asked Thompson "why he checked a box on a questionnaire in his 1994 Senate campaign beside a statement saying that abortion "should be legal in all circumstances for the first three months."
Thompson replied: "I don't remember that box."
I'm sure Pro-Choice Fred doesn't remember this 1994 National Review article either:
"On abortion, both Thompson and Cooper are pro-choice. But Thompson favors parental notification, Cooper voted against it." --via MyDD
Maybe this story from the Washington Post will jar Pro Choice Fred's memory:
"A 1994 story in the Memphis Commercial Appeal described Thompson and his Democratic opponent as 'basically pro-choice on abortion,' and an Associated Press piece from that same year called Thompson a 'pro-choice defender in a party with an anti-abortion tilt.'"
