MSNBC Liars Still Suffering from Clinton Derangement Syndrome (Video)

MSNBC is still doing an excellent job of making Fox News look fair and balanced. In the video clip below Andrea Mitchell airs a heavily edited clip of Bill Clinton's appearance on Meet the Press. The Clinton haters at the MSNBC propaganda network edited the clip so heavily that it completely distorts Clinton's remarks. As always, MSNBC's aim is to make Clinton look like an utter fool. Yeah, I know. This is what we have come to expect from MSNBC. Lies. On a slow news day, they make stuff up. See Media Matters' summary of the crime below the clip.

On the September 29 edition of MSNBC Live, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell aired a heavily cropped version of former President Bill Clinton's remarks during an interview broadcast on NBC's Meet the Press the previous day, then called Clinton's comments "hardly an endorsement" of Sen. Barack Obama and "not as effusive as you would expect." Specifically, Mitchell aired a clip of Clinton seemingly declining to respond in the affirmative when asked by Meet the Press host Tom Brokaw, "Would you use the same words for him [Obama] that you have used for Senator [John] McCain -- that you admire him, and that you think he's a -- and that he's a great man?" But Mitchell did not air or otherwise note Clinton's statements moments later that he "certainly admire[s]" Obama and that Obama's "greatness will ... become apparent" when he is elected president.

Additionally, the video clip misleadingly cropped Clinton's statement, "Hillary is the one who told me to go help him [Obama]. She said this guy's got real skills." Omitting what Clinton said just before, the clip as cropped falsely suggested that Clinton had said he was going to "go help" Obama's presidential campaign only at Sen. Hillary Clinton's request.

Pastors Endorse McCain & Defy IRS (Video)

Over 30 conservative pastors openly endorsed John McCain last Sunday and then mailed their sermons to the IRS. Gawd. And you thought this election was already crazy enough. "The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF), a conservative legal group based in Arizona, recruited the pastors for "Pulpit Freedom Sunday" to press their claim that the IRS tax code violates the free speech of religious leaders."

Sarah Palin 2006 Alaska's Governor's Debate (Video)

Topics covered in the 10 minute video clip below include abortion, gay marriage and benefits for same-sex partners. Sarah Palin debated Independent Andrew Halcro and Democratic former Governor Tony Knowles in the 2006 Alaska Governor's Debate. She defeated incumbent Governor Murkowski (R-AK) in the primary and went on to win the general election.

MSNBC: "Sarah Palin faces the biggest test of her month-old candidacy with this Thursday's vice presidential debate, but many Republicans are already convinced the Alaska governor is not ready for prime time -- and may never be," the New York Daily News says.

Boston Globe: Given her already-mocked interview with Katie Couric of CBS News last week, some Republicans fear how she will fare in the unscripted forum of a debate.

Bailout Bill Fails, Stockmarket Plunges, Republicans Blame Pelosi (Video)

The bailout bill did not pass the House. Both Barack Obama and John McCain grudgingly supported the bill. Democratic and Republican Congressional leaders supported the bill, along with that madman in the White House. Yet a significant number of both Democrats and Republicans voted against the bill (but mostly Republicans). In the video below, a Republican explains that this is what we get because Nancy Pelosi was mean.

Yes, we have a dysfunctional government.

And the cable news channels are still telling us that without this bill we're all going to die. Or unless a bailout happens, jobs and homes will be lost. ATMs will die. The Great Depression II is coming. Or so they say. Visions of a nation-wide Katrina are in my head.

Tell me again, why everyone is not voting for The Other Party?

Whose Religion is Weirder: Speaking in Tongues v. Automatic Feeds

This is the Pat Oliphant cartoon that has created such a controversy by offending virtually the entire Pentecostal denomination on the basis of the peculiar nature of their religion. As a nonbeliever, I find all religions to be exceedingly peculiar. So I am not unsympathetic to the obvious views of the liberal Pat Oliphant. But it is interesting that the religious beliefs of pols were once regarded as a private matter deserving of respect. Yet now we have devolved to such an extent that one channel of the 24/7 election war of 2008 is best described as:

Your candidate's religion is weirder than my candidate's religion!

The Washington Post says the angry emails are still pouring in. But what's really telling is the defense offered by ombuds(WO)man Deborah Howell:

"The Post has a policy against defaming or perpetuating racial, religious or ethnic stereotypes."

Seriously? Howell explains that since the Washington Post is opposed to defaming religions and perpetuating religious stereotypes, the cartoon did not run in the print edition. It was merely posted on the online Washington Post -- thanks to automatic feeds!

And that's about the scariest defense I've heard yet. Just think, this election and the fate of this nation could be decided by automatic feeds.
And people think speaking in tongues is a problem?

I'll have more on the topic of Whose Religion Is Weirder later today (or this evening); right now I have a bad case of Monday grogginess, and my day job is calling. And I want to catch up on the comments about the most important issue of this election - Sarah Palin. I took a much needed break from the internet yesterday, but I see some of you did not. I hope you were all reasonably civil to each other. (Don't forget to help keep this blogger alive by clicking through the ads in the sidebar. Thank you!)

R.I.P. Paul Newman, Progressive

Paul Newman died of cancer yesterday. He was a great actor, and an even greater human being. Remember him in his movies and remember him when you buy Newman's Own salad dressing, etc. Remember all the profits go to fight for social justice and help sick and poor humans because Paul Newman had a social conscience.

Paul Newman was a great and caring human being. He was a progressive.

Gender Politics: Sarah Palin's Beauty Pageant Video

In the 2 minute video below, Governor Sarah Palin tells Newsweek's Karen Breslau that beauty pageants weren't really her thing. She was in it for the scholarships.

It was the 1980s, she was living in a sexist culture that gave athletic scholarships to the boys and beauty scholarships to the girls.

Recall that Sarah "Barracuda" Palin was once point guard and captain of her school's girls' basketball team (she's #22 in the photo). The video is from Newsweek Women & Leadership forum, March, 2008. I'd link to one of the sites where I found the photo, but I'm trying to limit my links to blogs with sexist comments to only one per post.

So now Huffington Post brings you Sarah Palin's 1984 beauty pageant swimsuit competition because this has something to do with the presidential election.

It's important to trivialize the candidate for being a woman, and you can do that because we live in a thoroughly sexist culture. Of course, the video could be a phony, but by the time we find out, it will have gone viral. Don't you just love the way we do politics/hate women in America?

Miss Alaska Pageant Swimsuit Competition, 1984

Update: Surprise. The sneering boyz at Daily Kos have Palin's swimsuit competition up in a recommended diary. Soon every adolescent boy blog in the country will be drooling and sneering with them.

Obama-McCain Debate Highlights (Video)

The first presidential debate looked like a draw to me, but then I fell asleep a couple of times. The factcheckers are on the job, but I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that both John McCain and Barack Obama mangled the truth to some extent. This was not a debate to change minds. It would have been so much more interesting if they'd actually debated each other. Yawn.

Summing up the smallness of it all, Eve Fairbanks calls it:

They Both Lost -- The whole debate was weirdly imitative. You brag about your soldier's bracelet, I'll brag about my soldier's bracelet! . . He's parsing words, he isn't parsing words, let's call the whole thing off. The two guys fought all night in the weeds, tussling Talmudically over Henry Kissinger, the difference between a "strategy" and a "tactic," Obama's exact earmark request, and our official designation for the Republican Guard. . The discussion was often backward-looking, defensive, and record-oriented.

But never fear, Chris Matthews found something important to rant and rave about. Chris was almost red in the face with outrage because John McCain never once looked at Barack Obama. Horrors! Or so Chris said. According to Matthews, McCain is contemptuous of Obama. I'm almost glad Hillary Rodham Clinton doesn't have to put up with this crap anymore.

And over at CNN, the pundits tried to add some drama by telling us that Obama insulted McCain by calling him John instead of Senator McCain. Gawd. Will somebody please tell me why we need the press?

From the Obama camp:

From the McCain camp - McCain is Right:

Huff Post has more video highlights.

Update: Hierarchy-obsessed Josh Marshall compares Senator John McCain to "a low-ranking monkey." Gawd. If anyone else posted such drivel, Marshall would be the first to call 'racism'. Presidential election or two-bit carnival? You tell me.

Geraldine Ferraro: When A Woman Runs, Women Win

Quote of the Day

"Anytime a woman runs, women win. That doesn't mean I'm going to vote for her, but I do think that a woman running gives little girls the opportunity to say, 'Wow, I can do this.'"

MSNBC’s “Aging, White Male Divas”

Quote of the Year

"[Rachel Maddow's] program adds a good-humored female face to a cable news channel whose prime time is dominated by unruly, often squabbling schoolboys; Ms. Maddow’s deep, modulated voice is reassuringly calm after so much shrill emotionalism and catfights among the channel’s aging, white male divas."
The quotation about the "squabbling schoolboys" on the cable news channel infamous for its misogyny is from Alessandra Stanley's mostly positive review of MSNBC's “The Rachel Maddow Show” -- A Fresh Female Face Amid Cable Schoolboys.

Calm women instead of perpetually bickering male divas? If only we could halt the mind-numbing noise of perpetual schoolboy fighting that this culture has become by replacing some or most of the bickering male divas in charge of everything with calm women, then problems we've lived with my entire life might actually get solved.

Really people, the country is a freaking mess and we've tried pretty well everything except giving women a fair share of the seats at the decision making table. All it's going to take to make this happen is a whole lot of exceedingly outraged women. Are we almost there yet?

And speaking of shrill emotionalism from unruly schoolboys:

Debate Drama: How About if Nader & McKinney Stand in for McCain?

So McCain says the debate is off. Obama says the debate is on. Ole Miss says they’ve already spent millions and really don’t think they can postpone it.

The pundits are going wild with the idea of an empty chair debate. Obama would show up, debate the empty chair and win! That doesn’t seem fair. How about if Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney stand in for John McCain? Do you think Obama could handle it? We could have a debate about some real issues for a change. Single payer, for starters.

And now the McCain camp is talking about postponing the VP debate. Did John McCain hear the rumor about Obama's October Surprise? The one where Joe Biden steps down AFTER the VP debate so that Hillary can win this thing? And no, that wouldn't be any stranger than anything else about this bizarre election.

Sexist Ads on 'Progressive' Blogs, Because Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton Are the Same

The Democratic primaries are over, yet the stomach-turning stench of misogyny on 'progressive' blogs lives on. Anyone who doesn't get why rank in-your-face sexism is so much more fucking offensive when it comes from 'progressive' bloggers posers needs to go back to the fucking cave.

The progressive posers at The American Prospect are running the ad - Sarah Palin is "Yet Another BUSH We Can't Trust" - on all three of their 'progressive' blogs: Ezra Klein, Beat the Press, and TAPPED.

What exactly is the mission of The American Prospect? To promote the progressive agenda? Or to promote misogyny? Is there a fucking difference anymore?

Anyone who was paying attention during that mind-rape they called the Democratic primary, knows that 'progressives' employed the weapon of misogyny to help Barack Obama snare the nomination. Did anyone really believe they would stop the misogyny once the primaries ended? The only excuse they need is a woman in the race. Republican? Democratic? What the hell, we women are all the same.

There are ways to keep women in our traditional place, and some men have been using said ways for a very long time. If Cynthia McKinney was an actual threat to Barack Obama's ascent to the presidency, the progressive posers would fire their misogynistic guns at her too. Because they will do or say anything to win.

Wade into the comments of any of the big boyz blogs in threads pertaining to Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin or pretty well any woman and you will find enough woman-hating venom to turn your stomach. If the comments were as racist as they are sexist, the 'progressive' bloggers would be so aghast they'd shut them down. Because progressive posers draw the line somewhere.

They know racism is bad, and they know it because sometimes black men have rioted in the streets. And violence gets their respect. The longest revolution is so fucking long because women don't resort to violence to get our rights. Some* progressive or Democratic women will, however, resort to the earth-scorching violent protest act of voting for John McCain.

And the clueless progressive posers will call the women racist.

Sexist Men Earn More Money

Let's see now, a new study finds that sexist men make thousands of dollars a year more than non sexist men. Obviously both kinds of men make more money than women.

So any serious equal pay legislation would have to include a national PR campaign with the mission of shaming sexists and making sexism a societal taboo every bit as abhorrent as racism.

The only way that would ever happen is if a whole lot of women got really really pissed.

Maybe there's a silver lining to this election.

Jezebel - Sexism Pays:

The study, published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, found that men who said they believe in more traditional gender roles earned $11,930 more per year than men with more modern views. Women who held more traditional views made an average of $1,500 less than women with more equal views. Researchers came to this conclusion after analyzing data collected by a Labor Department survey that has tracked the changing attitudes of 12,000 people since 1979.

Sexist Southern Baptists Still Scared of Women Pastors

Move over Chris Matthews. Another day, another bunch of sexist Neanderthals annoyed that all the women aren't barefoot and pregnant. The Southern Baptist Convention just pulled a magazine from its bookstore shelves because it features women pastors on the cover!

Like some MSNBC pundits we know, Southern Baptists have a problem with women in positions of authority. I guess we are going to see a whole lot of good old Southern Baptist boys voting for the all male Democratic ticket this year. Because if they don't like women breaking glass ceilings, how can they possibly vote for Sarah Palin? Maybe they'll want to vote for Ralph Nader.

The magazines are now hidden behind the counter. If you want to buy a copy of the shocking Gospel Today, you have to ask the clerk for it, just like it's porn. The religious cretins have over 150 Lifeway Christian Bookstores in the nation. (store locations) Nashville has one. Anyone want to go downtown and harass the misogynists? I wish you would.

Teresa Hairston, owner of Gospel Today, whose glossy pages feature upbeat articles about health, living, music and ministry, said she discovered by e-mail that the September/October issue of the magazine had been demoted to the realm of the risque.

“It’s really kind of sad when you have people like [Gov.] Sarah Palin and [Sen.] Hillary Clinton providing encouragement and being role models for women around the world that we have such a divergent opinion about women who are able to be leaders in the church,” Hairston said. “I was pretty shocked.” Chris Turner, a spokesman for Lifeway Resources, which runs the stores for the Southern Baptist Convention, said, “It is contrary to what we believe.” It bases those beliefs on their interpretation of New Testament Scriptures.

FBI Agents Raid Campus Apt. of Alleged Palin Hacker

Update: "A federal grand jury sitting in Chattanooga on Tuesday will hear the case of (David Kernell) a UT student accused of hacking into the e-mail account of GOP vice presidential nominee, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin." via the Chattanooga Times Free Press

Saturday night, at around midnight, FBI agents showed up at a party at the campus apartment of University of Tennessee student and alleged hacker David Kernell. David is the 20 year old son of Tennessee Democratic lawmaker Mike Kernell. The agents searched Kernell's apartment and subpoenaed his 3 roommates -- who will be required to testify in Chattanooga this week.

According to Wired, Palin's hacker will likely be charged with a misdemeanor, but felony charges remain a possibility.

Washington Post:

According to a witness, several agents arrived at The Commons of Knoxville apartment block around midnight, took down the names of everyone at the party and then spent the next 1.5 to 2 hours taking pictures of everything inside the apartment. So far it looks like there are no publicly available search warrants, and no charges have been filed. Give it time. Witnesses say Kernell and his friends fled the apartment while his three roommates were subpoenaed.

It turns out that David Kernell is the son of Mike Kernell, a Democratic state representative from Memphis, and the blogosphere - especially right wing bloggers - has been cock-a-hoop about the possibility that the hacker in question is Kernell and the action was engineered by the Democractic Party. That includes Knoxville blogger and WBIR contributor Terry Frank who is helpfully (but with no basis in fact) posting images of Kernell's Facebook page, although she has removed his mobile phone number. Nice touch.

Tina Fey's '30 Rock' Wins Emmy Awards

Four big Emmy awards, including Best Comedy Series, went to "30 Rock" last night.

The series creator, executive producer, and lead writer Tina Fey, who also stars as Liz Lemon, took her Emmy moment to plug the series for some much needed viewers.

The show won best comedy series last year too. And still it struggles for viewers? Not a big tv watcher here, so I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going to tune in because I am a serious Tina Fey fan.

SNL: McCain Approves Negative Ads (Video)

Funny! Al Franken helped write the skit which includes references to: "tax cuts for pedophiles," "health care for Osama Bin Laden," and "fathering two black babies."

But isn't this what U.S. elections are all about? Misrepresenting the truth with absurd soundbite attack lines that could easily have been written by SNL writers. Just like our adversarial justice system, what's important is who can beat the other guy up and win! The SNL skit is funny, but it's not mocking McCain. It's only mocking the travesty of a democracy that we have become.

Chile’s Madame President: When I Cry, I Am Called Hysterical

Quote of the Day

"I remember (former Chilean) President Lagos once was so touched by something his eyes were teary and the press said ‘oh, what a sensitive man’. When I do it, I am called hysterical."

Speaking of crying, never forget:

Hillary Clinton on the Sexist Media

Their parties and policies may differ, but the male-dominated powers-that-be treat Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin much the same.

Hillary Rodham Clinton addresses the discriminating media:

"I think you have to ask yourself and it's a little exercise I'd like everybody in the press, and really all of us, to go through: Would the same thing be said about a man in a similar position and the answer 99 times out of 100 is no. I think it's been a long time since anybody covered what Barack Obama, Joe Biden, or John McCain wear or their hairstyle or any other personal characteristic like that."

Hillary also spoke on the subject of change:

"I think that a lot of people were excited to see the Republicans have a woman on their ticket. We had a woman vice presidential candidate in 1984; the Republicans have one this year. I think that is something to be excited about because it is a change. But that's not reason enough to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket."

PBS NOW: Women, Power and Politics (Video)

Tonight's PBS special - Women, Power and Politics - is a must see for those of us dedicated to the project of ending the male monopoly on power and politics in the USA. That does not mean that this blog advocates voting for Republican women. That does mean that this blog views the candidacy of Sarah Palin as a positive step forward in the mission of ending the rampant male domination in this sorry cowboy country.

The position of TGW is that women, like men, should vote their conscience and ignore the many Democratic domineering trolling bullies who tell you otherwise.

The candidacy of Sarah Palin is one more step toward the goal of getting a critical mass of women in power. A critical mass of women in politics will change everything, not because women are superior to men, but because most women have life experiences which differ from those of most men. Because we are a male dominated society, the life experiences of ordinary women are largely dismissed, belittled, and ignored in public policy and law.

Whether you agree or disagree, I hope you watch tonight's PBS Special: Women, Power and Politics:

[W]hy, with the success of people like Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, does the U.S. lag so far behind the world in the percentage of women in political office? Watch this preview and excerpt of a NOW on PBS hour-long special "Women, Power and Politics" which airs September 19 (check local listings). For more, visit http://www.pbs.org/now

Given the hoopla surrounding Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton's historical political ascendance, why does the U.S. rank only 69th in the world in percentage of women holding political positions? This week, in a one-hour special, NOW's Maria Hinojosa talks to women leaders around the world and here in the United States for an intimate look at the high-stakes risks, triumphs, and setbacks for women leaders of today and tomorrow. .

Misogyny in the USA fact: "Domestic violence is the reason 22%-35% of women seek emergency medical assistance at hospitals."

"American women across the political spectrum have told me that they feel unheard by politicians in both parties."

Sarah Palin Calls It: 'A Palin and McCain Administration' (Video)

Funny! Better look out, John McCain! But this is the first time I've seen a First Dude standing behind his candidate. Why do Republicans keep up this antiquated tradition? But if they're going to do it, at least Sarah's husband is performing the traditional wifely duty. Actually he seems to be doing a pretty good job in the supportive role.

Michelle Obama: Reason Not to Vote for Sarah Palin

Palin Hacker Appears to be Son of TN Lawmaker Mike Kernell

Update: Rep. Kernell says his son has been contacted by authorities.

David Kernell, son of Democratic Tennessee State Rep. Mike Kernell, appears to be a suspect in the hacking of Sarah Palin's personal email account. Reportedly, David is a University of Tennessee student and a chess enthusiast who uses the online identity: rubico10@yahoo.com.

"'i am the lurker who did it, and i would like to tell the story,'" rubico10@yahoo.com wrote. . The FBI and the Secret Service started a formal investigation Wednesday into the hacking, according to the Associated Press.

Rightwingers had David Kernell's email address and Youtube account info last night. The accounts have since been closed. According to Gateway Pundit, Rep. Kernell's website has also been taken down, but not before the blogger posted Memphis lawmaker, Rep. Kernell's personal information, address, phone number, etc. Rightwing blogs have David's photo, his blog link, and probably his entire life history and all of his personal information.

Scary.

I hope people remember that while the crime is outrageous, David Kernell is still only a suspect, and he is a kid. Of course, that didn't matter to a lot of Dems when the kid was Bristol Palin! Anyone ever do anything dumb when they were a kid? I'm not defending him, but he plays chess and therefore cannot be all bad. That said, what he allegedly did was really really dumb. And it makes Democrats look bad. Like they need any help with that this year!!

The Tennessean: State Rep. Mike Kernell confirmed Thursday that his son, a University of Tennessee-Knoxville student, is at the center of heated Internet discussion into the hacking of the personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
