Hostages Held at Hillary Clinton Office in N.H.

A man who says he has a bomb is holding campaign volunteers hostage in Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire.

MSNBC is reporting that the man is demanding to speak directly to Hillary Clinton. He has released one or maybe two of the hostages.

The hostage-taker, described as a man in his 40s with salt-and-pepper hair, ordered the workers to the ground and let the woman and child out of the building. A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape," witness Lettie Tzizik said.

More at The Caucus and Hillary is 44.

Update: Right-wingers are already calling the hostage situation a Hillary plant. If they weren't so freakin' scary, they'd be funny.

Generals & Admirals Call for an End to 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

While right-wingers continue to whine and fantasize that Hillary planted a retired Army Brigadier General at the GOP debate, others are focused on the question raised by retired and openly gay Brigadier General Keith Kerr:

Marking the 14th anniversary of legislation that allowed gay men and lesbians to serve in the military but only if they kept their orientation secret, 28 retired generals and admirals plan to release a letter on Friday urging Congress to repeal the law.

“We respectfully urge Congress to repeal the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy,” the letter says. “Those of us signing this letter have dedicated our lives to defending the rights of our citizens to believe whatever they wish.”

The retired officers offer data showing that 65,000 gay men and lesbians now serve in the American armed forces and that there are more than one million gay veterans.

“They have served our nation honorably,” the letter states.

Gee, Thanks for the Leadership Bredesen

Bredesen Says Dems Can't Win TN Senate, screams the AP headline posted over at Senator Corker's (R) website. Governor Bredesen (D) says it's just as well that Mike McWherter decided not to challenge Senator Lamar Alexander (R) in next year's election because Tennessee Dems are pretty well doomed to lose.

Gee, thanks Bredesen. That's just the kind of motivational leadership the Tennessee Democratic Party Republican Party was looking for.

But that's our DINO Governor. If Bredesen has ever stood and fought for a Democratic cause - other than himself - I can't remember it.

"[Bredesen's] shown little creativity . . and no compunction about tossing poor and sick Tennesseans off [TennCare] if the bottom line beckons."-- Ezra Klein

Krugman: Mandates and Mudslinging

In today's column, Paul Krugman chastises Obama for being as wrong on health care, as he is wrong on Social Security.

Yet again, Krugman hammers Obama for resorting to right-wing talking points, or 'giving aid and comfort to the enemies' of progressives.

From the beginning, advocates of universal health care were troubled by the incompleteness of Barack Obama’s plan, which unlike those of his Democratic rivals wouldn’t cover everyone. But they were willing to cut Mr. Obama slack on the issue, assuming that in the end he would do the right thing.

Now, however, Mr. Obama is claiming that his plan’s weakness is actually a strength. What’s more, he’s doing the same thing in the health care debate he did when claiming that Social Security faces a “crisis” — attacking his rivals by echoing right-wing talking points. . .

[I]n the effort to defend his plan’s weakness, he’s attacking his Democratic opponents from the right — and in so doing giving aid and comfort to the enemies of reform.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Endorses Hillary

Now THIS is an endorsement. Robert F. Kennedy, environmental activist and darling of the left, endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton and campaigned for her in Iowa yesterday.

The Hillary haters on the left are not going to like this endorsement. And expect Chris Matthews to whine loudly.

Robert F. Kennedy said:

"Hillary Clinton has the strength and experience to bring the war in Iraq to an end and reverse the potentially devastating effects of global warming."

"I watched proudly as Hillary won over New Yorkers across the state in her race for the Senate seat my father once held. Since then, she's been re-elected in a landslide victory and proven that she is ready to lead this nation from her first day in office. Hillary will inspire the real change America needs."

Senator Clinton responded:

"Bobby has worked tirelessly to protect our environment and raise awareness about the dangers of global warming and pollution. I'm deeply honored to have his support and counsel."

RFK argued in Rolling Stone last year that the 2004 election was stolen.

But we are still waiting for the really big ones: Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Al Gore.

More on the GOP Bible-Thumping Political Debate

Richelieu from the conservative Weekly Standard offers a nice summary of the pathetic but terrifying prospects on display at the GOP debate:

"So, a good night for for the lowest denominator, a bad night for the GOP. America got to see a vaguely threatening parade of gun fetishists, flat worlders, Mars Explorers, Confederate flag lovers and zombie-eyed-Bible-wavers as well as various one issue activists hammering their pet causes. My cheers went to a listless Fred Thompson who easily qualified himself to be president in my book by looking all night like he would cheerfully trade his left arm for an early exit off the stage to a waiting Scotch and good Cuban cigar. The media will probably award a win to Mike Huckabee, the easy listening music candidate at home in any crowd, fluent in simpleton speak and the one man on the stage tonight who led the audience to roaring cheers by boasting that he had a special qualification to be president that none of the second-raters on the stage could match: A degree in Bible Studies from Ouachita Baptist University of Arkadelphia, Arkansas."

Rightwing Rage: Hillary Plants Gay 'Operative' In GOP Debate! Hillary Wins!

Hillary Wins the CNN/YouTube GOP Debate

Army Brigadier General Keith Kerr challenged the white male homophobes on the CNN/YouTube debate stage about their position on gays in the military. He phrased the question about 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' beautifully (see the video below) and he elaborated from the audience.

While the gay veteran was pointing out that doctors, nurses and pilots are routinely discharged for the crime of being gay, members of the GOP audience actually booed. After he finished speaking, the straight white men on the stage said, too bad, we still support discrimination.

Romney the flip-flopper champion of the world got slammed by Anderson Cooper with a quote from Romney's liberal days. Just imagine, in his former life Romney said he "look[ed] forward" to the day when gays could serve. But last night, Romney hemmed and hawed and finally said, that was then, this is now.

But rightwingers have been hard at work since the debate ended. It's only 12:27 a.m., and already they've discovered that the gay veteran is a Hillary supporter! He was even on the steering committee of Veterans for Kerry!

Horrors! General Keith Kerr is a member of Hillary's LGBT Americans For Hillary Steering Committee!!!

A Hillary plant!!!!

That woman is freakin' everywhere.

The vast leftwing conspiracy wins another one! Somebody give Hillary -- the star of every debate -- a medal. This election is so ovah!

Rightwingers are all over this one folks. The only question remaining in their minds is: Was CNN in on Hillary's plot to plant a Democrat at the GOP debate? You can't make this stuff up.

Back in the reality-based world, Taylor Marsh has: General Punks GOP & CNN

Update: Were there any actual Republicans at the debate? Malkin reports (and presents evidence) that one of the abortion questions came from a 'declared' Edwards supporter, and the Log Cabin Republican questioner is a 'declared' Obama supporter, and the toxic toy questioner is a union activist for Edwards. Whew! I guess there must be a shortage of Republicans.

Here's your dose of Rightwing Hysteria:

CNN: You Can't Trust the Public to Choose YouTube Debate Questions

CNN Says Media Knows Best About Questions for the CNN/YouTube Republican Debate

CNN senior vice president David Bohrman says you can trust the public to submit debate questions via YouTube but you can't trust the public to choose which questions will actually be submitted to the GOP candidates.

It takes a trained journalist to choose the debate questions.

Cause the foolish public might choose stupid questions about things like UFOs or pearls and diamonds.

Apparently, Freddie Thompson is not losing is bid for the presidency by enough points, so one of his advisers George "Macaca" Allen is going to lend a tainted hand by live-blogging tonight's CNN/YouTube debate for Grandpa Fred.

The Volunteer Voter reminds us that George Allen knows a little something about YouTube.

Larry Flynt: Trent Lott IS Target of Ongoing Hustler Investigation

On his website, Larry Flynt confirms the rumor that Senator Trent Lott is the subject of one of Flynt's infamous sex (probably gay) scandal investigations:

"HUSTLER Magazine has received numerous inquiries regarding the involvement of Larry Flynt and HUSTLER in the resignation of Trent Lott. Senator Lott has been the target of an ongoing HUSTLER investigation for some time now, due to confidential information that we have received."

From Huffington Post we learn that gay prostitute Benjamin Nicholas denies all reports that he has ever had sex with Senator Lott.

But, over at Brad Blog, Jon Ponder asks: "[W]hat possible motive could a hooker have for lying about whether a wealthy and powerful man was or was not his client?"

20 Million Reasons to Vote

"There are 47 million single women eligible to vote in America. At present, 20 million of these women are not voting. Think about that for a moment: That’s a lot of people. That’s a lot of power. Media Ignores Gallup Poll that Shows Hillary as a Winner

Greg Sargent has the story about the media gone wild over the online Zogby poll that has long been recognized as unreliable and generally wrong. The internet poll now finds that Hillary loses to the top Republican contenders. Yet a new and far more reliable Gallup poll finds Hillary beating the top Republicans.

So naturally, the media goes wild over Zogby and ignores Gallup.

Greg Sargent:

The Zogby survey was covered repeatedly on CNN, earned coverage from MSNBC, Fox News, and Reuters and was covered by multiple other smaller outlets. By contrast, I can't find a single example of any reporter or commentator on the major networks or news outlets referring to the Gallup poll at all, with the lone exception of UPI.

I remember well my efforts to persuade my local newspaper to pay attention to the online Zogby poll back when it found that Bush was going to lose in 2004. When the Tennessean finally did mention the Zogby poll, it did so with the caveat that it was an unreliable poll. The sad fact is that many people vote for the candidate who the media proclaims to be the one who will win.

I think Hillary knows very well that she must never ever raise her voice to anything remotely resembling a scream. Nevertheless, the media will do its utmost to discredit the leading Democratic contender, whoever she or he might be. If not for our irresponsible media, Howard Dean would have won the Democratic nomination, and probably the White House.

Rudy Would Have Invaded Iraq Too

Rudy Giuliani's effort to sell himself as the new Bush continues. Yesterday, Rudy claimed "he ‘never had any doubt‘ that if he were President four years ago, he would have invaded Iraq."

Rudy is so psycho that he thinks campaigning as the new and improved pro war Bush will not only win the support of Republicans, but Democrats too:

“I actually believe that Democrats are going to agree with me on that by the time we get to the general election.”

Oh please, let Rudy be the nominee!

Al Gore at the White House -- Caption This!

Al Gore at the White House:

"Al Gore made his first trip back to the White House since the Clinton administration today for a ceremony in the Oval Office honoring the American Nobel laureates."

"George W. Bush promised us a foreign policy with humility. Instead, he has brought us humiliation in the eyes of the world. He promised to 'restore honor and integrity to the White House.' Instead, he has brought deep dishonor to our country and built a durable reputation as the most dishonest President since Richard Nixon."

MSNBC May Cancel Tucker Carlson Show

MSNBC appears to be waking up to the dreary dullness of the Tucker Carlson show.

Think Progress reports that the conservative show is in serious danger of being axed, so much so that Tucker's fans -- all 8 of them -- are circulating a petition to "save Tucker."

"Tucker recently signed off his MSNBC show with this comment: 'That does it for us. Thank you for watching, as always. We mean that sincerely to all eight of you.'”

Tell MSNBC -- viewerservices@msnbc.com -- what you think of Tucker’s boring show.

Trent Lott to Resign - Eyes Turn to Larry Flynt - Dems Eye Mississippi

Another day, another Republican resignation on the horizon. Senator Trent Lott announced today that he will resign before the end of the year. It's not much fun being in the loser minority party, so another racist is moving on to greener pastures.

Getting out now will enable Lott to avoid the "tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year," or so they say. They say that Lott's resignation will permit him to rake in the lobbying dollars immediately instead of sitting through a dismal wait period of two years.

Or maybe the real reason Lott is stepping down is that Larry Flynt is hot on Trent's tail, um, I mean trail. Flynt says he has a major scandal in the works -- a "'bombshell' that will stand 'Washington and the country on its head.'” And Flynt's upcoming 'bombshell' just happens to involve a prominent U.S. Senator. Oh my.

Reps. Chip Pickering ("who appears in the movie Borat, with a bunch of Pentacostal Christians cheering against the teachings of evolution") and Roger Wickeris are rumored to be the most likely replacement candidates.

Strange as it seems, Mississippi is now an actual potential Democratic pick-up state. Jerome Armstrong explains.

And here's more news of the weird: Rightwing bloggers dislike Senator Lott as much as do lefty bloggers.

A Little Wife-Killing Humor for Your Holiday Cheer

Can you believe it? This is an actual billboard -- now on display in Lockport, New York -- from the misogyny-flaunting American Concrete company [(716) 433-7915].

Cause wife killing is just so ha-ha funny.

We're guessing that American Concrete owner Kevin McCabe somehow missed the warnings from October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal:

A business owner is standing his ground, and the women in his family are standing with him, after a YWCA of Niagara official charged his company’s advertising is gender insensitive.

Richfield Street-based American Concrete had a new billboard erected Monday on West Avenue. Over the image of a wrapped gift, the solicitous catchline, “Wife need new shoes?” is accompanied by the American Concrete logo and a greeting, “Happy Holidays.”

The humorous inference to “cement shoes” or “concrete shoes” as a method of doing away with one’s wife is at the heart of the controversy. What company owner Kevin McCabe sees as risqué spoof, YWCA Executive Director Kathleen Granchelli condemned as ignorant.

“I’m sure it was considered to be a joke, or something cute, but with the number of fatalities we see in the domestic violence field, it’s not a joke,” Granchelli said Thursday. “It’s in very poor taste.”

No, it’s not, countered McCabe. “I think the mainstream understands it,” he said. “It’s unfortunate that some people are reading much more into it than they should.”

Via Feministing where Ann observes: "Nothing like a little eggnog, a roaring fire, and some wife-killing jokes to make the season bright."

Fred Thompson Reveals Gun Fetish - Says Paradise is a Day Spent with Guns

At a campaign stop in South Carolina, Freddie Thompson said "a day in paradise" is a day spent with rifles, shotguns and pistols.

"It's a beautiful day in paradise," said fetishist Freddie Thompson.

Fred Thompson Accuses Fox News of Bias!

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Fred Thompson made the shocking claim that Fox News is biased!

Think Progress:

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Republican presidential candidate Sen. Fred Thompson (R-TN) charged “that Fox News is biased against his campaign, charging that the network highlights commentators who have been critical of his run for the presidency.”

After Fox aired clips of Fred Barnes and Charles Krauthammer attacking Thompson’s candidacy, Thompson responded, “This has been a constant mantra of Fox, to tell you the truth.” . . . Fox News has been accused of having a bias in favor of presidential contender Rudy Giuliani.

"...for you to highlight nothing but the negatives in terms of the polls and then put on your own guys who have been predicting for four months, really, that I couldn't do it, kind of skew things a little bit. There's a lot of other opinion out there." -- via The Hill

Sen. Corker Claims He is 'Very Underwhelmed' by Bush's Intellect

Think Progress reports that Tennessee's junior Republican Senator Bob Corker says he is "very underwhelmed" by the "depth" and "complexity" of the discussions with Bush on the Iraq War:

Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) “raised some eyebrows” with his recent remarks about President Bush’s knowledge about Iraq. His comments “about his experiences with the White House during meetings on the war in Iraq” left some conservatives in the crowd “befuddled.” Chattanooga’s NewsChannel 9 reports:

“I was in the White House a number of times to talk about the issue, and I may rankle some in the room saying this, but I was very underwhelmed with what discussions took place at the White House. . . Let me say this. George Bush is a very compassionate person. He’s a very good person. And a lot of people don’t see that in him, and there’s many people in this room who might disagree with that…. I just felt a little bit underwhelmed by our discussions, the complexity of them, the depth of them.”

Gee, welcome to the club, Senator Corker. Is this your way of saying you will soon be switching parties?

Archbishop: God NOT on America's Side

The London Times reports that the Archbishop of Canterbury judges the United States to be the 'worst imperialist' of all.

Whether America is indeed the worst imperialist of all is not really the story. The story is that the Archbishop of Canterbury has pronounced it so and thus reminded everyone that as the world's lone superpower, America is, in fact, the biggest preemptive bully in this bruised and battered postmodern world.

The Archbishop derided the notion that God is on America's side and made the shocking claim that God did not design the universe to revolve around America. Oh Mon Dieu!

The Times:

Williams suggested American leadership had broken down: “We have only one global hegemonic power. It is not accumulating territory: it is trying to accumulate influence and control. That’s not working.”

Rowan Williams claimed that America’s attempt to intervene overseas by “clearing the decks” with a “quick burst of violent action” had led to “the worst of all worlds”.

He said the crisis was caused not just by America’s actions but also by its misguided sense of its own mission. He poured scorn on the “chosen nation myth of America, meaning that what happens in America is very much at the heart of God’s purpose for humanity”.

He contrasted it unfavourably with how the British Empire governed India. “It is one thing to take over a territory and then pour energy and resources into administering it and normalising it. Rightly or wrongly, that’s what the British Empire did — in India, for example.

“It is another thing to go in on the assumption that a quick burst of violent action will somehow clear the decks and that you can move on and other people will put it back together — Iraq, for example.”

Kucinich: 'Will the Real John Edwards Stand Up?'

Quote of the Day

“[John Kerry] wanted to come out against the war in 2004, and John Edwards argued against it. Now we have a candidate who voted for the war and voted to fund the war, but says he against it. He voted for the Patriot Act, and now he complains about its abuses. He voted for China Trade in 2000 knowing that Americans would be hurt, and now he’s decrying the unsafe products pouring into this nation from China. He supported nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain, now he’s against it. Will the real John Edwards please stand up?”
Quoted in a Kucinich press release titled: Edwards’ pro-war posture in ’04 raises serious credibility questions.

As usual, Dennis Kucinich knows what he is talking about. But is there anyone left in the Democratic Party who is not pissed at John Edwards?

Rove Rejected by Time Magazine

Before Karl Rove got his job as columnist for Newsweek, he was looking for work at Time magazine, but was rejected, according to Radar Online.

Unlike Newsweek, Time appears to have standards:

Time's editors apparently felt the cost/benefit analysis wouldn't be in their favor if they embraced the man who has done more than anyone to keep the spirit of Joe McCarthy alive and well in American politics. (Read Joshua Green's definitive profile from the Atlantic in 2004.) "Time thought this wouldn't be like hiring George Stephanopoulos," my source explained. "They think Karl is essentially like an unindicted co-conspirator in a whole string of felonies."

DeLay: ‘I’d like to bitch-slap’ Paul Krugman

Tom Delay opens his mouth and smelly toads fall out, proving that he continues to be one of the biggest thugs in the GOP.

Think Progress reports:

At a recent book party for former U.N. ambassador John Bolton, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) told the Washington Examiner that conservatives in Congress need “some backbone.” As an example of what he means by “backbone,” DeLay described what he would like to do to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman: “I’d like to bitch-slap him.”

Delay also said that the GOP is "going to get our clocks cleaned in 2008" and "Hillary [Clinton] will be the next president."

Update: Crooks and Liars reports that Delay the Thug got Olbermann's coveted Bronze Award for Worst Person in the World. Congrats bugman!

Oprah to Join Obama in Iowa & New Hampshire in the Battle for the Votes of Women

In the battle to capture the votes of women, Oprah Winfrey will stump for Barack Obama in Iowa and New Hampshire. Already the 2008 election has provoked the most serious battle for the votes of women since Geraldine Ferraro ran for the vice presidency in 1984. In most U.S. elections, women and the issues that most impact their lives are ignored.

It's amazing the difference a woman in the race can make.

After Obama disclosed the news about Oprah, Ralph Hoagland, a member of Obama’s Northeast Steering Group, said:

"I think that Oprah can say to women 'you do not have to vote for the first woman president. Vote for what you need.'"

Of course, some women feel that they need a woman president.

To date, Oprah's support for Obama has not swayed African-American women. It will be interesting to see if she can change that by campaigning for Obama in Iowa and New Hampshire.

In the race to capture the votes of black women, Hillary Clinton continues to be way out front. The Washington Post reports: "In a head-to-head competition between Clinton and Obama, black men are evenly divided (44 percent for Obama, 44 percent for Clinton), while black women support Clinton (52 percent to 35 percent)."*

It's also true that polls find African-American women to be more supportive of feminist values than white women, and this has been true for pretty well forever. (Of course, there is disagreement among feminists on the question of whether a vote for Hillary as the first woman president is representative of feminist values.)

But the gender gap does not prevail in all questions. Among African-American women and men, "more than 6 in 10 in each group" say that Hillary Clinton is "the Democrat with the best chance of getting elected president."

Scott McClellan's Shocking Revelation: Bush, Cheney, Rove and Libby are Liars

Quote of the Day:

"The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. So I stood at the White house briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby."

"There was one problem. It was not true. I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice President, the President's chief of staff, and the president himself."

Pub date: 04/21/08

Raw Story: "President Bush, Karl Rove, and other top administration officials were "involved" in misleading the White House press corps about the outing of ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame, a forthcoming book from former Press Secretary Scott McClellan alleges."

Media Gone Wild Over Obama's Insignificant Lead in Iowa Poll

I'm about to stop believing anything our drama queen media says. Stuart Rothenberg critiques the media gone wild over Obama's latest lead in 'the new ABC News/Washington Post survey of likely Iowa Democratic caucus attendees.'

This is not the first time a poll has shown Obama in the lead in Iowa, and the lead is statistically insignificant. But you'd never know any of that from the breathless 'momentous breaking news' coverage now playing on your teevee.

Anyone want to place a bet on who chooses the Democratic nominee? Would that be 'we the people' or our out-of-control high drama media?
