Happy (Day-After) Mother’s Day!
By MzNicky
[Note: Because of circumstances beyond her control—mainly, my tardiness, but also, her being under the weather—egalia was unable to post this for me yesterday. Better late than never, I hope.]
And a glorious Fitzmas Eve (fingers crossed, breath held) to all, breeders and non-breeders alike!
I wanted to put together a thoughtful, inspirational-yet-nonsentimental post for Mother's Day, but conflicting emotions interfered.
First, there’s the repugnant notion of a special Hallmark®/FTD®-mandated holiday that dictates that if I don’t send my mother a prefab card and a Spring bouquet then I don’t love her—a cultural demand so insidious that despite my sincere protests and best efforts, my own children will soon descend upon me bearing unnecessary gifts purchased with their scarce, hard-earned money. Well, what’s a mother to do? They never did listen to me anyway.
Secondly, there’s undeniably something to be said for the fact that women who have willingly and enthusiastically chosen to become mothers, and have been fortunate and privileged enough to have had that whole thing work out pretty well for them, would willingly set themselves on fire before they would permit anyone or anything to harm their children. It’s an aggressive form of love that deserves to be saluted, so if the kids want to say “thanks” for all that by giving me scented soaps and a spa gift certificate on my special day, hey, who am I to say they’re wrong? Then again, there's something to be said for women who having willingly and enthusiastically chosen not to become mothers because they just damn didn't want to, and they deserve to be saluted as well, and if no one else has ever done so, let me be the first.
Thirdly, what with the overpopulation problem; the respected sensitivities of those who want to reproduce but can’t, or are being forced to reproduce but don’t want to; and all manner of unnecessary turmoil currently being stirred up by certain godbags and douchebags who make it their life’s work to seize control of our ladybags, I just didn’t really know where to go with a Mother’s Day post, although I seem to have turned one out anyway.
Instead, I'd like to offer for your viewing and listening pleasure the following link, which is guaranteed sappy-sentiment-free and which was sent to me this morning by one of my very own Nicklets. As I wipe a grateful tear from my eye, I realize that happy motherhood is made of moments such as these, when it seems you must have done something right somewhere along the way.
Enjoy!
