The Pentagon will hold its Freedom Walk tomorrow on the 4th anniversary of 9/11. The Freedom Walk is sponsored by the Department of Defense and is meant as a memorial to 9/11.
Presumably it is also meant as a celebration of freedom.
When Freedom Walkers arrive at the event, they will be required to present government-issued photo IDs, just to be sure they are on the Pentagon’s pre-approved list.
Those participating in the Pentagon-sponsored Freedom Walk must be pre-registered and thus pre-approved by the Pentagon. Freedom Walkers will march from the Pentagon to the Mall along a secret route (or as the WaPo says, the route is not yet revealed).
Freedom Walkers will walk in lock-step behind Rumsfeld inside specially erected Freedom Fences. According to Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense, the Freedom Fences are meant to ensure that the Freedom Walk is "sterile," or free of unapproved citizens.
The Pentagon's list of unapproved citizens include members of the media. All media are pre-blacklisted from the Freedom Walk (though they may view it from a distance).
Freedom Walkers will be required to dress appropriately. Impeach Bush shirts will not be tolerated. Or in the words of one blogger, "Don't expect to get in wearing an Impeach Bush t-shirt. Freedom only extends to those who will carry the president's flag to the gates of hell."
Against the war? Voted for Kerry? Admit it at your own peril.
If you have any political thoughts that are not on the Pentagon’s Pre-Approved Thought List, please keep them to yourself, or you may be arrested.
Locked outside the Freedom Fence will be a scraggly band of out-of-step Americans. They will be wearing and thinking all kinds of unapproved thoughts. They will not be called Freedom Walkers, they will be called nasty unpatriotic protesters.
I'm not sure what the protesters have in mind, but a Freedom Funeral March is what comes to this reality-based mind.
