Book of Daniel Yanked: Nashville Too 'Sensitive'

The new NBC show, The Book of Daniel has been yanked from the air by the yokels at the local NBC affiliate, Channel 4.

According to the station's General Manager, Elden Hale Jr., the city of Nashville is too sensitive for the show, or Nashville is "a particularly religiously sensitive city."

What Elden means to say is that he's been hearing from some ever-vigilant fundamentalist Christians, who say the show is blasphemous. It's an Abomination cuz there's a gay man and a lesbian on the show.

The Book of Daniel "features one of primetime's few openly gay male characters, has a lesbian supporting character and is written by a gay screenwriter."

The American Family Association and Focus on the Family have orchestrated letter-writing campaigns in their ever vigilant campaign to stamp out every voice and every view that is not their own. And they don't care who they hurt.

Rather than letting us watch the show and rot in their mythical hell, they've convinced the local yokels at Channel 4 to join them in the campaign to promote Old-Time religious ignorance and bigotry.

Gawd help us. Can we raise some money for airfare to send these wackos to the Promised Land? But would Big Sur even take them?

The Tennessean:

WSMV-Channel 4 pulled the new NBC show The Book of Daniel after the network rejected a Channel 4 request to air it overnight instead of during "family viewing time," WSMV General Manager Elden Hale Jr. said yesterday.

WSMV's general voice mailbox shut down within 20 hours of the airing of the two-hour premiere last Friday because 137 complaint messages jammed the machine, WSMV officials said. There also were complaints via e-mail and regular mail, including letters bearing church letterheads.

Channel 4 received no official complaint from local Episcopal churches or from organized protests, Hale said, adding that it was the quality, not the volume, of the complaints that impressed him.

NBC issued this statement yesterday: "The Book of Daniel is a quality fictional drama about an Episcopalian priest's family and the contemporary issues with which they must grapple. We're confident that our viewers can appreciate this creative depiction of one American family and will understand it to be an entertaining work of fiction."

UPDATE: Pam at Pam's House Blend has more, including a copy of the rightwinger's alert - which was distributed in Sunday school classes and churches - asking folks to convey their displeasure to NBC affiliates. The handout was distributed before the show aired! She has another post on the AFA's campaign against The Book of Daniel here.
