Ageism, Sexism, & A Belated Happy Birthday Madame Speaker
Last week Nancy Pelosi celebrated her 69th birthday. Instead of sending her a card, Sandra McElwaine devoted 3 sick pages at the Daily Beast to speculating endlessly on the question of plastic surgery.
McElwaine wants to know whether or not the nation's first ever female Speaker of the House has gone under the knife.
Has Madame Speaker had eye lifts? Botox? Or more?
Sandra McElwaine appears to agree with Rush Limbaugh's ageist and sexist assertion that America is not ready for women in politics because the nation is full of sexist and ageist bigots like Limbaugh and they don't want to watch women grow old. We all know how beautifully young and good-looking slug-infested Rush is.
Kate Harding at Broadsheet sums up the situation:
Out of this muddle, I can only reach one solid conclusion: 69-year-old grandmothers must stay out of the public eye if they don't wish to have their faces pointlessly scrutinized to death. Happy belated birthday, Madame Speaker! Sheesh.
