Sarah Palin showed up at a Philadelphia Flyers hockey game and made history by performing a historically male ritual. The mom took her daughters along for the experience.
The first ever female Republican vice presidential nominee dropped the ceremonial first puck at the Rangers vs. Philadelphia Flyers NHL ice hockey game. Yes, she was booed, but she was also cheered. The Philadelphia Flyers once booed Santa Claus. And contrary to some media reports, Piper did not appear at all traumatized.
Piper looked thrilled and right at home in a Flyers jersey.
Sarah Palin has spoken frequently about the importance of sports, and Title IX, in her own girlhood. Although she was a champion basketball player, gender rules forced her to pursue scholarships through beauty pageants instead of sports. Naturally she has been mocked and belittled for taking advantage of the limited choices available to girls.
Since Title IX was enacted: "Female high school athletic participation has increased by 904% and female collegiate athletic participation has increased by 456%." The legislation was passed in 1972 and has been under attack ever since.
Girls everywhere benefited from seeing Sarah Palin and her daughters out there on the hockey ice. Naturally, the media ignored this aspect of the story. Since it's not possible in this country to have an election and act like grown-ups too, the media chose to spew forth a slew of hysterically politicized, mean, and even inaccurate stories about an actual vice presidential nominee performing a much needed feminist act for all of our daughters.
But if the media were concerned about what's good for girls, this would be a whole other culture.
