Washington Post Faces Criticism for Swift-boating Obama

The Washington Post is facing a barrage of criticism for its Nov. 29 front page story about the "rumor" that Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim. Call us odd, but many of us do not tactfully code 'blatant right-wing swift-boating lies' as 'rumors.' Said 'rumors' have been proven to be lies by media outlets such as CNN, but somehow the Washington Post forgot to mention that.

Assistant Managing Editor Bill Hamilton's lame defense of the story says it all:

The paper’s intention, Hamilton said, was “to write a story about the kind of rumors that are out there,” and added that “saying something is a rumor is not saying it’s true.”

Politico's Michael Calderone points out that instead of calling the madrassa story a 'rumor,' the paper could have been really bold and accurately referred to the story as "a false report.”

According to Paul McLeary at the Columbia Journalism Review, the WaPo's hit piece on Obama “may be the single worst campaign ‘08 piece to appear in any American newspaper so far this election cycle.”

The Washington Post has been termed by Tweety himself to be a neocon paper. It is also the paper that brought us that all important political story about Senator Hillary Clinton's cleavage.
