Newt says Spanish is the language of the ghetto. I think that means Republicans don't want the Hispanic vote. Here's Newt Gingrich equating bilingual education with the ghetto. Forty years ago, Newt would be saying, 'white is best.'
Times have changed. Nowadays, 'English is best.'
"'The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. ... We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto,' Gingrich said to cheers from the crowd of more than 100."
Newt Gingrich was speaking to the National Federation of Republican Women.
Peter Zamora, co-chair of the Washington-based Hispanic Education Coalition -- which does support bilingual education -- said Newt's comments were "very hateful." And: "Spanish is spoken by many individuals who do not live in the ghetto."
In a sane or healthy country -- a country that actually valued education, community, and the well being of its people -- we'd all be bi- or multilingual. If not, our leaders would be talking about the urgent need to immerse every woman, man and child in bi- or multilingual education.
Obviously, this country values none of those things. This is not a sane or healthy country.
