Nashville's Monolingual Act

Nashville is for English Speakers, says Metro Council

Music City USA is set to become Officially English Music City USA -- unless the mayor of Nashville does something unprecedented and vetoes a bill. The Metro Council passed the divisive ordinance by a vote of 23-14.

If you want to thank someone, thank Councilman Eric Crafton, whose previous accomplishments include spending taxpayer money to make it the city's business to proclaim that "Jesus was an actual man." [eric.crafton@nashville.gov]

Crafton tried to make Nashville English Only, but that proved to be illegal, so he settled for Almost English Only. Never mind that making Nashville Officially English may cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars. Never mind that the Chamber of Commerce opposes the measure. Never mind that there is already talk of a legal challenge.

What counts is that Metro Council members have been overheard to say that something must be done about the terrible inconvenience of having to press that number one button on the telephone. And then there's this:

In Crafton's view, "No nation can withstand the antagonism, tension and conflict brought about by multilingualism and multiculturalism."

So can we expect the Monocultural Act to follow Crafton's Monolingual Act? Probably. Obviously, Crafton doesn't travel North much. Toward the education of Councilman Crafton, we hereby dedicate the following video clip:

There is still hope that Mayor Purcell will surprise us all and do the right thing. [via vv]
