Webb to Give State of Union Response
Democratic Senator Jim Webb, a Vietnam War veteran, will give the response to Bush's State of the Union address. What a Perfect Choice! And it was made by Speaker Pelosi, of course. Webb is perfect for the job for at least two reasons: 1] Webb has a son serving in Iraq. 2] Webb is a Democrat with a spine.
While the pResident gives his State of the Union speech, he will be flanked by Nancy Pelosi and Dick Cheney -- a picture perfect summary of the two parties. Heh.
WASHINGTON - President Bush, already facing fierce opposition to his decision to send more U.S. troops to Iraq, will confront a tough audience next Tuesday when he delivers his State of the Union address to the first Democratic Congress in 12 years.
Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia, whose upset victory over Republican Sen. George Allen was the decisive race that gave Democrats control of Congress in last year's midterm elections, will give the Democratic response to Bush's address. The selection was made Tuesday by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), said Webb spokeswoman Jessica Smith.
A former Navy secretary to President Reagan and a decorated Marine combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Webb was among the earliest and most vocal opponents of Bush's decision to invade Iraq. His son is in the Marines, serving in Iraq.
