Laura Bush was here in Tennessee -- in the Republican strongholds of Franklin and Kingsport -- yesterday, trying to persuade the demoralized GOP base to actually show up at the polls and vote for Bob Corker.
And as if they don't already have enough to be demoralized about, Corker gave Laura a script that contained at least one of Corker's very tall tales. It's bad enough that Corker stretches the truth, but getting the First Lady to read his lies is beyond the pale.
Laura Bush told the Republican crowd: "Under Mayor Corker's leadership, Chattanooga's violent crime rate dropped by half."
Corker has traveled all over the state bragging about this remarkably dramatic crime reduction and even broadcast it in a TV ad. But both the blogger, R. Neal and the Associated Press determined that Corker is stretching the truth.
The F-B-I's annual report shows violent crime in Chattanooga did drop between 2001 and 2004 _ but only by 28-point-7 percent.
It appears that former Congressman Ed Bryant (R) was telling the truth when he accused Bob Corker of being the "king of lies."
It's one thing to lie to the people of Tennessee, but getting the First Lady to repeat your lies is really pathetic.
