The wonderful folks over at Democracy for Tennessee have made election day a whole lot more hopeful for progressives with their endorsement of: THE TENNESSEE 12: Progressive Candidates for Tennessee's Future.
You can read about the candidates over at the Democracy for Tennessee website where you'll find links to the candidates' websites, their responses to surveys, and all kinds of ideas about how you can help the candidates, as well as the very deserving DFT.
Democracy for Tennessee is, of course, an affiliate of Democracy for America. Their mission includes recruiting and encouraging progressive candidates to run for office at every level. The progressive candidates we elect at the local level today are the ones who will one day move on to the state and/or national level.
At the Nashville DFA website you will learn about the campaign to bring Air America to Nashville, and you'll read about rightwing efforts to take over the Metro School Board and even the Metro Council!
I counted 15 Tennessee counties with DFA chapters. If your county or town doesn't have one, you should probably get to work on that.
You can email them here, and you can sign up at the website for email updates and/or to volunteer to help paint this red state blue!
To paraphrase Democracy for Tennessee Chairman Mark Naccarato, it's going to take a lot more than just voting to fix the mess we're in.
Or as Mark says:
[T]ake the leap and decide to be a part of this mission by pledging to help the Tennessee 12. Donate to each one of the Tennessee 12. Write letters to the editor on their behalf. Make phone calls to their voters. Or sign up to do a door-to-door canvass for them - even if you have to drive an hour to get to their district.
A $25 dollar donation or a day knocking doors won't make a big difference in a multi-million dollar Senate or Governor's race, but it could be all the difference in a county commission or sheriff's race. And you can have the peace of mind knowing that your valuable time and money will be spent electing progressive candidates who share your values.
The Nashville DFA is holding a town hall meeting on Iraq, July 17, 6:30pm, at the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church, 5820 Hillsboro Road, Nashville.
As the flyer says, Washington doesn't want to have this debate, but Nashville does.
