Mary Cheney Trashes Democrats

In her memoir, the VP's lesbian daughter calls John Kerry "a son of a bitch" and John Edwards "a total slime."

And what does Mary say about the people who want to take her rights away? What does she say about the people who want to ban gay marriage, but have given Mary Cheney some really cool jobs? The VP's daughter knows when to keep her mouth shut.

Ms. Cheney is a lousy gay activist, but she is a very good Republican.

And I forgot the name of her book. I trust you have too.

Mary Cheney's book comes out just in time for the scheduled June 5 Senate vote on the prohibition of gay marriage. Presumably the Senate vote will boost her sales. Or, maybe not.

The Vancouver Sun:

In a memoir published Tuesday, the 37-year-old lesbian describes a proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage as a "gross affront'' to gay Americans and reveals she almost quit the Republican campaign after President George W. Bush's endorsement of the legislation two years ago.

But Cheney saves her harshest words for Bush's 2004 opponents, calling Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry a "son of a bitch'' and his running mate, John Edwards, a "total slime'' for discussing her sexual orientation during nationally televised debates during the campaign. . .

"She is a little late to the party,'' said John Aravosis, a Washington gay-rights activist and political blogger. "For the longest time, Mary wouldn't speak. Now she gets a million-dollar book advance and suddenly she is speaking. It rings a little hollow.''

. . . A group of gay Republican activists, the Log Cabin Republicans, said Cheney's outspoken opposition could help defeat the proposed ban.

Other long-time gay rights activists were less enthused about Cheney's entry into the debate.

"So she is a lesbian who came out against the federal marriage amendment big deal. Am I supposed to be grateful?'' asked Robin Tyler, executive director of Equality Campaign. "She can't be cast as a gay saviour. She could have had the principle to withdraw from her father's campaign two years ago. Frankly, Mary Cheney still embarrasses me.''

Update: Alice, over at 10,000 Monkeys and a Camera, has, "Mary, Mary... how sad that you're a Cheney..." and observes that Ms. Cheney "chooses to associate with people who think that she made a choice to be evil and immoral, and the people who are most able to understand her struggles feel so betrayed by her that they have little to offer in the way of sympathy. How pathetic is that?"
