The Washington Times reports that the White House is making "contingency plans for the withdrawal of Harriet Miers."
"White House senior staff are starting to ask outside people, saying, 'We're not discussing pulling out her nomination, but if we were to, do you have any advice as to how we should do it?' " a conservative Republican with ties to the White House told The Washington Times yesterday.
That bastion of truth, the White House insists that there is no truth to the story.
The conservative paper also reports that Miers' meetings with senators have gone so poorly that "the White House is not scheduling any more new meetings."
The best line in the Washington Times story comes from an anonymous White House aide:
"Who would have believed the wheels would be coming off this early in the second term, and with our own people firing at us?"
Ah yes, the Republican meltdown, a work in progress.
