GOP Cuts Would Destroy 700,000 Jobs

A plan to lose 700,000 jobs and destroy the economy? What? Is George W. Bush back in power?:

Zandi, an architect of the 2009 stimulus package who has advised both political parties, predicts that the GOP package would reduce economic growth by 0.5 percentage points this year, and by 0.2 percentage points in 2012, resulting in 700,000 fewer jobs by the end of next year. His report comes on the heels of a similar analysis last week by the investment bank Goldman Sachs, which predicted that the Republican spending cuts would cause even greater damage to the economy.

From Feminist Frequency: Women’s Stories, Movies and the Oscars (Video)

It's almost time for the Oscars, i.e., more awards for more movies almost exclusively by and about men. This year, the male centered The King's Speech and The Social Network are the top contenders to rake in the honors. We are all rather startled when women-centered films like The Kids Are Alright are even nominated.

Reagan: 'The right to belong to a union is one of the most elemental human rights'

Oops, Wisconsin's Governor Walker's sacred hero, the hallowed GOP deity Ronald Reagan not only supported unions, he belonged to a union. Ooops, Ronald Reagan not only belonged to a union, Ronald Reagan was a union boss:

Yet conservatives may be shocked to learn that their idol Reagan was once a union boss himself. Reagan was the only president in American history to have belonged to a union, the AFL-CIO affiliated Screen Actors Guild. And he even served six terms as president of the organized labor group. Additionally, Reagan was a staunch advocate for the collective bargaining rights of one of the world’s most famous and most influential trade unions, Poland’s Solidarity movement.

In Ronald Reagan's words, "the right to belong to a free trade union . . [is] one of the most elemental human rights."

Wisconsin Governor Walker Asked to Leave Madison Restaurant

The unpopular Governor Walker will be lucky if he manages to ever again appear in public without being booed. Staying in office for the remainder of his one term is also going to be a challenge.

The name of the restaurant has been removed due to threats from Governor Walker's out of state fans:

The M******t [a restaurant] in Madison, WI confirms that on Friday night, ******* (one of the owners) politely asked Scott Walker to leave the establishment when other customers began booing him. A bartender at The M*****t said that ‘his presence was causing a disturbance to the other customers and management asked him to leave.’

Conservative bloggers are posting the restaurant's phone number and the owner's name and urging readers to call and complain. The very same conservative bloggers are simultaneously charging that the unpopular Governor's eviction never happened. Admittedly, the story sounds too good to be true. One can hope.

Iowa Abortion Bills Could Allow Murder of Abortion Providers

Virginia Votes to Regulate Abortion Clinics Like Hospitals; Most Clinics Will Close

Putting abortion providers out of work, that appears to be your average Republican's idea of a jobs program. With the country in serious decline, obsessing over women's wombs is how our Republicans spend their time. Gawd help us:

The Virginia General Assembly has agreed that abortion clinics should be regulated as hospitals instead of physician's offices, a move that antiabortion activists have sought for almost two decades, insisting that it would improve clinic safety.

Abortion rights advocates say it will make the state one of the most restrictive for abortions in the country and could force as many as 17 of the state's 21 abortion clinics to close.

Feminist Quote of the Day

"[M]y gut instinct tells me that there’s a kind of fundamental misogyny in the culture. There just is. You know, there’s just a weird anxiety around women. . . I think that it's just easier to uphold, like, male heroes and men things. And that's just kind of how it is. I think we're getting better, but I think it's just deeply rooted."

Tennessee Rallies to Fight Union Busting Efforts Aimed at State's Teachers

Folks are gathering today at the State Capitol in Nashville to express opposition to the union busting efforts of Tennessee Republican lawmakers:

Senate Republican leaders are pushing a bill that would do away with a 1978 state law that requires school boards to engage in collective bargaining negotiations in districts where a majority of educators have organized.

Representatives of Citizen Action, Tennessee AFL-CIO, Service Employees International Union, Professional Firefighters, Fraternal Order of Police, United Campus Workers and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers are expected to speak.

And there will be a rally, in d0wntown Nashville on March 5th, in suport of teachers and against the union busting efforts of Tennessee lawmakers:

The Tennessee Education Association is urging all teachers to take part in the march to Legislative Plaza on Saturday, March 5 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. They're meeting at the Bicentennial Mall in Downtown Nashville, and asking everyone to wear red. . The Tennessee Tea Party is planning a counter protest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 5.

Tina Fey: The Definition of a Crazy Woman

Quote of the Day

"I know older men in comedy who can barely feed and clean themselves, and they still work. The women though, they’re all crazy. I have a suspicion- and hear me out, because this is a rough one - that the definition of crazy in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore."

Indiana Democrats Flee State to Escape Vote on Union Busting Bill

Shutting down repressive Republican governments by leaving town? Why didn't someone think of this before?

The Indiana union-busting bill is said to be even worse than the one in Wisconsin.

Seats on one side of the Indiana House were nearly empty today as House Democrats departed the the state rather than vote on anti-union legislation. A source tells The Indianapolis Star that Democrats are headed to Illinois, though it was possible some also might go to Kentucky. They need to go to a state with a Democratic governor to avoid being taken into police custody and returned to Indiana.

Wisconsin's Governor Walker Delivers For Koch Brothers

Wisconsin's Governor Walker is a prime example of a politico who is paid to deliver the agenda of the billionaire Koch Brothers:

It turns out that not only did billionaire conservative brothers David and Charles Koch support the candidacy of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, but they also pushed Walker to have a showdown with state unions. So says Tim Phillips, the president of the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity, who are helping to lead anti-union counter-protests in the state and leading anti-union measures in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania, too. .

“The Koch brothers are the poster children of the effort by multinational corporate America to try to redefine the rights and values of American citizens.” -- Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI)

She was pinched so hard by her attackers that the red marks that covered her body were initially thought to be bites. “The psychological trauma is as bad as, if not worse than, the physical injuries,” said a friend. Paul Krugman: Wisconsin's Governor Walker Threatens Democracy

Quote of the Day

"What Mr. Walker and his backers are trying to do is to make Wisconsin — and eventually, America — less of a functioning democracy and more of a third-world-style oligarchy. And that’s why anyone who believes that we need some counterweight to the political power of big money should be on the demonstrators’ side. . .

"[I]f America has become more oligarchic and less democratic over the last 30 years — which it has — that’s to an important extent due to the decline of private-sector unions. And now Mr. Walker and his backers are trying to get rid of public-sector unions, too. . So will the attack on unions succeed? I don’t know. But anyone who cares about retaining government of the people by the people should hope that it doesn’t."
