Gay-Rights Battle: Boy Scouts Lose Lease in Philadelphia

The city of Philadelphia has ended its effort to persuade the Boy Scouts of America to stop discriminating against gays. The Scouts have been operating out of the Beaux Arts building since 1928. They pay the city $1 a year instead of the market value of $200,000 a year. But now the city of brotherly love is ending the policy of subsidizing rent for gay haters.

If the Boy Scouts are going to discriminate, and they are, they're going to have to pay rent like everyone else:

“At the end of the day, you can not be in a city-owned facility being subsidized by the taxpayers and not have language in your lease that talks about nondiscrimination,” said City Councilman Darrell L. Clarke, who represents the district where the building is located.

“Negotiations are over.”
