The chart below is from TRIP, a national transportation group. A report (pdf) by TRIP lists the bridges on this chart as "the twenty most heavily traveled bridges in Tennessee that are considered 'deficient.'" And, damn it, one of them is right smack in my neighborhood. It is constantly being repaired. And I am not crossing it ever again.
Here is the definition of 'structurally deficient' provided by the report:
"Bridges are structurally deficient if they no longer meet their intended design capacity or were, in the past, designed for a capacity less that the state’s current legal loads."
As I noted earlier, according to the Federal Highway Administration Tennessee has 1,324 structurally deficient bridges!
Hat tip to Left of the Dial for the chart, and he has more on bad bridges in Tennessee.
