News of Kroger's anti gay discrimination, here in Nashville, is spreading across the nation. In an act of blatant discrimination, Kroger has pulled the local gay newspaper, Out and About, from its stores in Nashville.
Publications that are covering the story include Forbes and CNN Money. The Advocate, the largest national LGBT magazine in the U.S. also has the story.
The Advocate points out that although "a Kroger spokeswoman told the Associated Press that the company, to remain neutral, has a policy of not displaying publications that promote 'political, religious, or other specific agendas,'" gay publications continued to be carried in Atlanta stores. In fact, Kroger advertises in The Southern Voice.
If Kroger fears that Nashville residents are so easily offended, you have to wonder why they carry the Nashville Scene:
Kroger distributes the Nashville Scene, an alternative weekly that publishes political columns and has ads for strip clubs and dating phone lines.
Dallas Kroger stores also carry at least one gay publication.
Queerty reports that gays are "flaming mad" at Kroger.
According to the AP: "Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery chain, operates 2,468 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states, under two dozen local banners."
See TEP for a local action that expires on June 17.
