Sex Scandal, Hypocrisy, and the Republican Party

"It's vile. It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction."
---Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), during the 1998 congressional debate over President Bill Clinton's [consensual] affair with a White House [adult] intern.

As if we needed yet another reminder that the biggest flaw in the Party of Family Values is the nauseating stench of hypocrisy, Foley is said to have built his career as "a protector of children."

Rep. Foley "built a political career in large measure on legislative proposals meant to halt the sexual predation of children and others."

The co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus referred to sex offenders as "animals" who will persist "unless stopped."

Now we know how Foley knew so much about the subject.

You've probably read at least some of the sexually explicit instant messages penned by now disgraced and resigned Rep. Mark Foley.

Mr. Foley’s fondness for children has so far been exposed only in the form of electronic messages.

Did Congressman Sicko inflict any of his fantasies on Congressional pages -- or other kids -- outside the cyber world?

GOP leaders who have reportedly known for months about Foley's fondness for sending inappropriate e-mails to kids include, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (N.Y.) and Reps. Rodney Alexander (R-La.) and John Shimkus (R-Ill.), as well as a senior aide to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and former Clerk of the House Jeff Trandahl."

Something tells me that this little GOP Sex Crime Scandal is not the October Surprise that Karl Rove had in mind.
