The Republican Backlash

Hard Core Supporters Fleeing Bush And GOP Congress

The Miserable Failure has some really miserable poll numbers, which bring to mind that infamous Chris Matthews quote I saw over at Billmon's tonight.

"Only the real whack-jobs don't like Bush."

And Billmon's response:

"I always knew this country was full of whack jobs."

Heh.

And check out this gem from the New York Times/CBS News Poll that the Green Knight seems to appreciate every bit as much as I do:

"Fifty percent said Democrats came closer than Republicans to sharing their moral values, compared with 37 percent who said Republicans shared their values."

As if all of this isn't reason a plenty to break out the French Bubbly, the WaPo reports that hard core Republicans are fleeing in droves from Bushie and his Do Nothing Congress!

And 'hard core' is no exaggeration. We're talkin' Heritage Foundation, Club for Growth, American Conservative Union, etc. It just doesn't get any harder core than these guys.

Disaffection over spending and immigration have caused conservatives to take flight from President Bush and the Republican Congress at a rapid pace in recent weeks . . . The Gallup polling organization recorded a 13-percentage-point drop in Republican support for Bush in the past couple of weeks. These usually reliable voters are telling pollsters and lawmakers they are fed up with what they see as out-of-control spending by Washington and, more generally, an abandonment of core conservative principles. . . Conservatives are demoralized and defecting in worrisome numbers.

Hard core conservatives may actually distrust The Decider almost as much as liberals do. Maybe Bushie is a uniter after all.

It's going to take more than tax breaks and rovian specters of burning flags and gays in nuptial bliss to win these people back.

And every time America fills up at the gas pump, ordinary Americans -- conservatives and liberals alike -- remember how very much we don't like Bushie and the Republicans he rode in on.

And there's the coming hurricane season.

And rumors of an approaching Fitzmas.

Be still my liberal heart.
