David Brooks: Barbarians at the Gate

In his latest column, Drafting Hitler (link to free column below), David Brooks analyzes the Danish cartoon riots and has nary a word to say about the role of U.S. foreign policy, or modern day colonialism, in the provocation of the seething rage against all things Western.

Brooks tells the story that colonizers have always told.

We are civilized.

They are barbarians.

Our mind-set is progressive and rational. Your mind-set is pre-Enlightenment and mythological. In your worldview, history doesn't move forward through gradual understanding. In your worldview, history is resolved during the apocalyptic conflict between the supernaturally pure jihadist and the supernaturally evil Jew.

The conservative columnist forgets to address the progressive and rational mind-set of that Christian Leader of the West, you know, the post-Enlightenment One who invaded Iraq so that GOOD might do battle with EVIL.

The columnist makes no attempt to explain the post-mythological mindset of the leader of the rational West, the leader whose religious worldview holds that the provocation of violence in the Middle East will hasten the long-anticipated arrival of the APOCALYPTIC RAPTURE, or the END TIMES.

Like all wannabe colonizers, the civilized columnist is delusional.
