Alito: Abortion Not A Constitutional Right

Today's Washington Times reports that it has obtained a document from 1985, in which Supreme Court nominee Alito wrote:

"[T]he Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion."

The paper pulls the above quotation from this passage:

"I am particularly proud of my contributions in recent cases in which the government has argued in the Supreme Court that racial and ethnic quotas should not be allowed and that the Constitution does not protect a right to an abortion."

To the inevitable argument that Alito was merely expressing the government's position, consider this gem:

"It has been an honor and source of personal satisfaction for me to serve in the office of the Solicitor General during President Reagan's administration and to help to advance legal positions in which I personally believe very strongly," he wrote.

The paper adds that the cited documents and many others will be released today from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
