Americans Abandoned by their Government

I watched the story of Americans abandoned by their government close to 24/7 this week. And now this week, I expect the death toll will be aired 24/7. Will the list of the dead be separated into two categories? One list for those who died because of Katrina and one list for those who survived Katrina but died because help came too late.

Even though I tried several times, I could never find the words to express the outrage, the anger, the sadness and the hurt.

Here are two women who found the words.

Anne Rice in the New York Times:

Why did America ask a city cherished by millions and excoriated by some, but ignored by no one, to fight for its own life for so long? That's my question.

..[T]o my country I want to say this: During this crisis you failed us. You looked down on us; you dismissed our victims; you dismissed us. You want our Jazz Fest, you want our Mardi Gras, you want our cooking and our music. Then when you saw us in real trouble, when you saw a tiny minority preying on the weak among us, you called us "Sin City," and turned your backs.

Well, we are a lot more than all that. And though we may seem the most exotic, the most atmospheric and, at times, the most downtrodden part of this land, we are still part of it. We are Americans. We are you.

Arse Poetica:

Two stolen elections and a vacation day for every dead Murkan soldier in Iraq does not a "president" make. This most dangerous of buffoons has been on vacation for one-fifth of his occupancy of 1600 Penna. One year out of five!!

This may actually bring me home to Jesus, because I need at least the psychological prop of believing in a Hell for these craven sociopaths to burn in for multiple eternities.

What further privations are we going to unleash on the poor? How much more horror does everyone have to suffer while we blare "I'm Proud to be an American" from the loudspeakers and nod along to the refrain that this madministration is not to blame for anything? What more egregious example of craven disregard for human life, for the poor, for a tax base that does not, could not even figure into their daily calculations when discussing Bechtel profits in the billions do people need to act?

On a related note, Diane has found something to do with those W stickers.
