Media Coverage of NOW Convention & State of Emergency Rally in Nashville

The following list is only some of the media coverage of the 2005 national NOW convention and rally held in Nashville, TN:

Washington Post
Yesterday, during its convention, the National Organization for Women planned an impromptu march on the Tennessee state capitol in response to news of her retirement. "We are determined not to have an extremist who will roll back women's rights," Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority, said in an interview from the rally, with the crowd in the background shouting, "Hell no, we won't go." The feminist movement kicked into action immediately when it lost O'Connor.

San Franciso Chronicle
The president of the National Organization for Women declared a "state of emergency" for women's rights and planned a march on the state Capitol as news of Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement reverberated through the group's annual convention. . . The group shifted the agenda for their three-day convention to include a march to the Tennessee Capitol on Saturday to "make sure Senator Frist and all senators are going to hear our voices. We're going to march on every Capitol in this country," Gandy said.

New York Times
On Saturday, NOW canceled some workshops so hundreds of members, some chanting abortion-rights slogans, could march from the conference to the State Capitol, about a mile and a half away. . . At the rally, Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation, told the crowd that if the Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, had presidential ambitions, he could not be known as the lawmaker who helped roll back abortion rights,
