Stephen Colbert Declares Victory at FEC; Gets His Own Super-PAC

“There will be others who say, ‘Stephen Colbert, what will you do with the unrestricted Super-PAC money?’ ” Mr. Colbert told reporters after the F.E.C. hearing. “To which I say, I don’t know. Give it to me and let’s find out.”

A "SuperPAC" is "a political group that can legally accept unlimited contributions from people, corporations, and unions to campaign for candidates and causes."

News from The Onion continues to be decidedly mild, i.e., downright sane, compared to the real news in this bizarro nation. Stephen Colbert's mockery of the Supreme Court decision Citizens United v. F.E.C., -- which opened the flood gates to corporate money in elections -- has turned into the ultimate mockery. Today the FEC approved Colbert's own corporate money-tree. Colbert can promote his new FEC approved Super-PAC on his own show, compliments of Viacom. No disclosures will be required. Thanks Supremes!

Krugman: If Obama Caves on the Debt Ceiling, It's the End of the Presidency

'If' Obama caves? I think Krugman meant 'when':

Think about it. There’s a significant chance that failing to raise the debt limit could provoke a renewed financial crisis — and Republicans would rather take that chance than allow a reduction in tax breaks on corporate jets.

What this says to me is that Obama cannot, must not, concede here. If he does, he’s signaling that the GOP can extract even the most outrageous demands; he’s setting himself up for endless blackmail. A line has to be drawn somewhere; it should have been drawn last fall; but to concede now would effectively mean the end of the presidency.

SCOTUS: Kids Have First Amendment Right to Heinous & Depraved Violence

In a particularly unenlightened ruling, the U. S. Supreme Court overturned the 2005 California law that limited the amount of extreme or "heinous, cruel and depraved" violence that could be legally inflicted upon the minds of children by the greedy $10.5 billion video game industry.

The video game industry worried not about the children, nor about the children's violently misogynistic society, but rather about the fear that the California law was stifling their profits. The High Court agreed and ruled that children have a First Amendment right to be exposed to brutally heinous, cruel and depraved violence.

Justice Breyer dissented:

"What sense does it make to forbid selling to a 13-year-old boy a magazine with an image of a nude woman, while protecting a sale to that 13-year-old of an interactive video game in which he actively, but virtually, binds and gags the woman, then tortures and kills her? What kind of First Amendment would permit the government to protect children by restricting sales of that extremely violent video game only when the woman — bound, gagged, tortured and killed — is also topless?”

And all violent video games were not restricted by the California law:

To have been subject to the sales ban, the game must have lacked “serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value for minors,” or it must allow a player to virtually inflict serious injury in a manner that is “especially heinous, cruel or depraved in that it involves torture or serious physical abuse to the victim.”

Gay Marriage and Leadership: Obama Is No Cuomo

Governor Cuomo is receiving high praise for the kind of leadership so sadly lacking in President Obama:

The type of leadership that Mr. Cuomo exercised — setting a lofty goal, refusing to take no for an answer and using every tool at his disposal to achieve it — is reminiscent of the stories sometimes told about with President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had perhaps the most impressive record of legislative accomplishment of any recent president. It’s also a brand of leadership that many Democrats I speak with feel is lacking in President Obama. .

That Mr. Cuomo’s accomplishment pertains to same-sex marriage, an issue on which Mr. Obama has adopted an indecipherable position born of a cynical-seeming political calculus, makes the contrast sharper. And that it involved achieving cooperation from Republicans, something Mr. Obama has rarely received, makes it seem as though Mr. Cuomo has more effectively executed upon Mr. Obama’s “theory of change” than the president himself, demonstrating that articulating clear and unapologetic goals is not incompatible with persuading votes on the margins.

NY Times Editorial: Gay Marriage: Where’s Mr. Obama?

The New York Times editorial page is miffed at Obama's failure to stand for "one of the last great civil-rights debates in this nation’s history," or pretty well anything:

On Thursday night, when same-sex marriage in New York State was teetering on a razor’s edge, President Obama had a perfect opportunity to show the results of his supposed evolution on gay marriage.

Unfortunately, he did not take it, keeping his own views in the shadows. The next night the Republican-led New York State Senate, of all places, proved itself more forward-thinking than the president on one of the last great civil-rights debates in this nation’s history.

Gays, Lesbians Protest Obama Outside LGBT Fundraiser in New York (Video)

Inside the mostly male crowd hoped in vain that Obama would at long last endorse same-sex marriage. Outside the crowd had fewer illusions and more women. Obama said he believes gays and lesbians should have all the same legal rights as everyone else - except marriage.

President Obama said he expected some heckling and he got it. More than 600 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people paid $1,250 each to attend a Democratic fund-raising dinner in Manhattan on Thursday and, to the vocal disappointment of some, they did not hear him endorse same-sex marriage generally or the bill that would legalize it in New York State.

Mr. Obama’s spokesman, Jay Carney, had said early in the day that the president would not announce any shift in his longstanding but “evolving” position on same-sex marriage — that it is a matter for states to decide. Even so, some in the mostly male audience at the hotel ballroom seemed to hang on his words as if waiting for just such a shift.

If the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Was About Race (Men)

Quote of the Day

“Here’s the text of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, Section 1: 'Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.' Replace the word “sex” with “race," and there would not be a single dissenting vote in the entire Congress. It’s as simple as that. Let’s pass the ERA once and for all.”

Al Gore: Obama Is A Wimp On Global Warming (Video)

Al Gore spells it out in the Rolling Stone: Climate of Denial. President Obama is a wimp or has "failed" on global warming. When it comes to a sane and timely response to the climate crisis, China is quickly moving far ahead of the U.S. :

In a 7,000-word essay for Rolling Stone magazine that was posted online Wednesday, Gore says Obama has failed to stand up for "bold action." Gore contends that Obama has made little progress on the problem since Republican President George W. Bush.

"Obama has never presented to the American people the magnitude of the climate crisis," Gore says. "He has not defended the science against the ongoing withering and dishonest attacks. Nor has he provided a presidential venue for the scientific community ... to bring the reality of the science before the public."

Supreme Court Sides With Sexist Wal-mart, Says Women Can't Sue

The Supreme Court ruled for sexism and against women:

All the justices agreed in the decision released Monday that the case couldn't proceed as a class action in its current form, reversing a decision by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. By a 5-4 vote along ideological lines, the court also said there were too many women in too many jobs at Wal-Mart to wrap into one lawsuit. While individuals could still pursue their own cases, they would continue with the prospect of costly legal fees and long time frames and ultimately lack the power that would have accompanied the largest sex-discrimination lawsuit in U.S. history. Two of the named plaintiffs, Christine Kwapnoski and Betty Dukes, vowed to continue their fight, even as they expressed disappointment about the ruling. "We still are determined to go forward to present our case in court. We believe we will prevail there," said Dukes, a greeter at the Wal-Mart in Pittsburg, Calif.

Russ Feingold: The Democratic Party Is In Danger of Losing Its Soul

Russ Feingold and some 2500 other progressives at Netroots Nation (Facebook) are expressing some well-deserved righteous anger with the very non progressive Democratic Party and its center-rightist leader Barack Obama:

“I fear that the Democratic Party is in danger of losing its identity,” Feingold said in his keynote address to a crowd of around 2,400 progressive activists and bloggers here at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the most ever for the event. .

“I think it’s a mistake for us to take the argument that they like to make that, ‘Well, what we’re going to do now is, we’re going to take the corporate money like the Republicans do and then after we win, we’ll change it.’ When’s the last time anyone did that? Most people don’t change the rules after they win by them. It doesn’t usually happen. It never happens,” Feingold said. “You know what? I think we’ll lose anyway if we do this. We’ll lose our soul when it comes to the issue of corporate domination. People will see us as weak. People will see us as corporate-lite.

Sarah Palin E-Mails Released

Because current Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell is a friend to Sarah Palin -- or a dick -- depending on your point of view, the state released the e-mails in hard copies only. The race is on to get the thousands of pages scanned so that you dear reader can help the media expose Sarah Palin in all her many nefarious ways:

Moments ago in Juneau, Alaska, state employees started handing out 55-pound boxes full of paper to dozens of awaiting reporters. Each set of six contains nearly 25,000 printed pages, comprising the entirety of Sarah Palin's e-mail correspondence during her half-term as governor of Alaska. .. The release—which does not include roughly 1,100 pages deemed confidential by the state—is the culmination of a four-year battle under Alaska's open records laws for access to Palin's e-mail traffic initiated by Mother Jones' David Corn. (You can read his saga here.) ..

The New York Times and Washington Post say they will begin posting scans today, and are asking readers for help sifting through them for stories. The Post has set up this Twitter feed devoted to the e-mails. Mother Jones, MSNBC.com, and ProPublica—which has written up a handy backgrounder on what the cache may contain—are collaborating on a searchable online database here.

Women Who Wear the Pants In Global Politics: Hillary Clinton & Angela Merkel (Video)

Fans of Hillary's cackle will like this.

Diplomatic 'girl power' on display at the State Department - Merkel rounded out the mutual admiration society when she presented Clinton with a framed copy of the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper. On the front page was a photo of two pantsuit-clad women from the waist down, with the caption "Which one is Merkel and which one is Clinton?" The following page of the paper showed the full photo of both women taken during Clinton's last visit to Germany.

Everyone got a good laugh with what Merkel called her "playful gift," including the secretary of state -- and Merkel's point that women are more often wearing the pants in global politics wasn't lost on Clinton or the crowd.
