Boo hoo. The passage of the stimulus bill means Governor "No Medicine" Bredesen will likely have to forgo the thrill of cutting more Tennesseans free from access to health care. Tennessee is set to receive some $4.28 billion over the next two years.
But Bredesen hasn't given up yet, the infamous "Profits before People" Governor warns that he may still get to make cuts "to prepare the state for when the federal money runs out."
The Tennessean:
A total of 70,000 jobs would be created in Tennessee by the plan, according to an estimate by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. The state would get more than $701 million for roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects, according to the estimates from Pelosi's office.
Also, the state would get nearly $791 million to support K-12 and higher education, according to estimates by the Federal Funds Information for States. he FFIS estimated Tennessee would get an additional $171 million that it could use for public safety and other uses that the state decides.
The FFIS, a service of the National Governors Association and National Council of State Legislatures, also estimates Tennessee will get $1.6 billion to fund Medicaid.
