FEMA Attempts to Bar Media Access

Josh Marshall weighs in on the efforts of the Bushies to bar media access to the full horror of the Katrina devastation. Without the media as witness, the FEMA fools will be free to screw up and cause yet more death and destruction, and all without a word of criticism. Afterall, criticism might embolden the next hurricane.

Good gawd, the Katrina survivors would still be at the Convention Center if it weren't for the media.

Bush has made it clear that no heads will roll at FEMA, which means the only heads that will be rolling are those of the American people.

Blame game? How about the Saving American Lives game?

Talking Points Memo:

AT FIRST THE evidence was scattered and anecdotal. But now it's pretty clear that a key aim of the Bush administration's takeover of the NOLA situation is to cut off press access to report the story.

Now comes this post from Brian Williams, which suggests a general effort to bar reporters from access to many of the key points in the city.

Take a moment to note what's happening here: these are the marks of repressive government, which mixes inefficiency with authoritarianism. The crew that couldn't get key aid on the scene last week is coming in in force now and taking as one of its key missions cutting public information about what's happening in the city.

Andrew Sullivan insists that reporters must find a way to cover the story with or without permission.
