Fundies Frothing at the Mouth Over Upcoming Gay TV Show

Local Homophobes Swear Email Works Better than Prayer

The local fundies have decided that a gay TV show, featuring news about the LGBT community, is simply more than they can bear. They haven’t seen it yet - the first show is set to air on June 11 - but the word is they’ve already stocked up on popcorn and cancelled all their plans for the night of the show’s premiere.

We’re sure they will be sorely disappointed. Last we heard there were no plans for lesbian sex.

For gawd’s sake fundies, get a grip. It’s a cable news show. It’s on at 9:30 pm. It covers news, business and entertainment. I repeat: there will be NO lesbian sex. We know that an uncommon number of old white men find lesbian sex to be the entertainment they like best, but NewsChannel 5+ is not HBO.

It’s not clear why the fundies don’t just petition the station for their own show. They could call it: Homophobe Man. Mr. Flowers (see below) might want to consider starring in Homophobe Man. We're sure the venerable Jesus General would be happy to lend his insight to this endeavor.

Studies find that most homophobes are old white men. Homophobes also seem to have a lot of time on their hands, as well as a sheer obsession with the practice of homosexuality.

An email alert from The Tennessee Equality Project warns that:

"The Religious Right has begun a campaign to urge Channel 5 not to run "Out & About Today," a new program on Channel 5+ that will provide news about Middle Tennessee's GLBT community.

Channel 5 has already received a high volume of emails urging them to abandon the project. An email from you in support of the program will help ensure that positive representations of GLBT people appear in mainstream media. If the campaign is successful in removing the program from the Channel 5+ lineup, our opponents will score a major victory and seek to turn back the clock on other gains in business and politics."

TEP advises all civil rights supporters to send an email to
Michelle Bonnett and copy news@newschannel5.com.

Over at commongoode.org, you will find a virtual encyclopedia of intolerance. Manned by Jerry Flowers, the website’s overriding mission is the protection of masculinity, as only the cowboys know it.

In his longer-than-you-will-believe rant about the scary gay TV show, Flowers reveals that he is a longtime and loyal reader of Out & About, the local LGBT newspaper. Imagine that. Since Flowers and Sen. Jeff Miller belong to the same obsessive Protecting Masculinity As Only the Cowboys Know It club, I’m guessing Flowers sprouts hair on his face too.

Apparently, Flowers likes to harass the good people at Out & About by sending them a deluge of right wing propaganda. He appears to be mystified and hurt at their less than enthusiastic response.

From commongoode.org:

"Out & About is a rather schizophrenic publication. On the one hand, it sometimes has led all Nashville media outlets on complicated topics, for instance, in discussing serious and life-threatening issues. Last year’s Centers for Disease Control warning about a treatment-resistant syphilis outbreak among Nashville homosexuals, for example, was covered with excellent professionalism by the O&A staff months before mainstream media outlets such as The Tennessean and NewsChannel5 even mentioned it.

On the other hand, the publication and its staff can be downright catty when sent press releases that they do not like, even threatening to sue to stop their delivery. (A news magazine that doesn’t want news! How novel. One wonders how objective it can be in producing a TV show.)"

Catty? Cute choice of words, Flowers.

As to the upcoming cable TV show, Flowers goes on to say that “judgment should be withheld until the product is aired.” Then he proceeds to go into serious overkill with a long list of email address and phone numbers for the cowboys who have already judged.

Gee, whatever happened to the power of prayer?

I’ve pasted the overkill below. Feel free to use some or all of the contact info. You might also want to look up the contact info for the National Guard, the KKK, or anyone else Flowers hasn’t yet gotten around to.

From http://commongoode.org/ :

"Complaints to stations must be kept on file to be submitted with the station’s license renewal application, so you should also send a copy of your WTVF complaint letter to the Federal Communications Commission’s Inquiries & Complaints Department (see contact information below). Since cable regulations are also again now under scrutiny by Congress, send a copy of your complaint letter to all Tennessee Senators and Representatives in the U. S. Congress. If you want to take your complaint directly to the Federal Communications Commission members, their contact information is also supplied. "
