Dillard's Charged With Race Discrimination In Hair Salons
Back in 2002, Dillard's was ordered to cough up 1.2 million for race discrimination.
The large department store chain is in trouble again. The latest is a class action suit filed in Birmingham, Alabama, charging that Dillard's has two sets of prices in its hair salons.
One price for whites and another for African Americans.
From Black America:
Whether their hair is long or short, coarse or fine, some black women in Alabama say they've had to pay more to get their hair done because of the color of their skin.
Thomas, a homemaker, says she went into a Dillard's in her city in 2003 and asked for a wash and roller set. She was told that the price was $30 for blacks, but a sign posted in the shop showed $20. That price was for whites, she was told.
"When I asked why, they said it was priced differently for blacks because it takes longer and the products are different. I told them to just use the products used on white hair," Vaughn told BlackAmericaWeb.com. "Then I was told it still would be $30 because there is a different price for blacks."
