Obama Turns On The Base, Again

Once again, Obama thrills Republicans by throwing his base under the bus:

There are rules of politics, and then there are laws. One of the latter, often attributed both to Texas football coach Darrell Royal but which dates to at least the 1920s, is just seven words: "Dance with the one that brung ya." There are other ways of saying it of course: Don't forget where you came from; don't cross the base; don't piss off the money people.

But alas, that is just what Obama did today, in the first of several moves to get out ahead of the new Republican majority in the House.

Joe Scarborough: GOP Should 'Man-Up' & Stop Sarah Palin

Sounding like some scared Neanderthal from the 16th century, Joe Scarborough argues that Republicans must 'man-up' and stop Sarah Palin from wrecking the Republican Party. By which, Scarborough means the good old boy's party will be forever ruined if the woman dares to challenge the GOP boyz by applying for their job.

The Neanderthal rants:

Republicans have a problem. The most-talked-about figure in the GOP is a reality show star who cannot be elected. And yet the same leaders who fret that Sarah Palin could devastate their party in 2012 are too scared to say in public what they all complain about in private.

Enough. It’s time for the GOP to man up.

Menstruating Women Beware of Invasive TSA Groping

Wear a panty-liner at your own risk, advises one menstruating traveler. When a panty-liner blocked the TSA agent's view of a woman's vulva, the menstruating woman was subjected to groping "so invasive that I was left crying and dealing with memories that I thought had been dealt with years ago of prior sexual assaults."

Krugman: Obama Embraces Conservative Worldview

Paul Krugman comments on the Democratic President's right-wing mindset and embracement of conservative mythology. Like many of us, Krugman saw this early on in the 2008 campaign, but the adoring mob would not listen:

"More and more, it’s becoming clear that progressives who had their hearts set on Obama were engaged in a huge act of self-delusion. Once you got past the soaring rhetoric you noticed, if you actually paid attention to what he said, that he largely accepted the conservative storyline, a view of the world, including a mythological history, that bears little resemblance to the facts."

Nancy Pelosi: When A Man Holds the Job. . .

Quote of the Day

"I was the first woman speaker. It didn’t get that much play. And I’m not a publicity seeker, so it was OK with me. Boehner, before the election, they had him on the cover of Newsweek. Now he’s on the cover of Time, and women are coming to me and saying, 'Is the job less important when a woman holds it?'

"My point is that when a man holds the job, the press seems to view it as more worthy of that kind of attention. But when a woman — even though it was historic — holds the job, they view it as less important. We have to dispel the notion that it’s not as big a job when a woman has it."

Man Shoots TV Over Rage At Sarah Palin's Daughter Dancing

When I first heard about this, I thought the madman must be Andrew Sullivan. After the enraged hormonal guy shot up his tv because of his seething rage about that Palin woman, he turned his gun on his wife, apparently thinking that if he can't control the Palin women, at least he can take care of one bitch.

Gawd only knows who or what he might have shot if he'd heard the news that Sarah Palin said: "I Could Beat Obama in 2012!"

Cowan, 66, allegedly became so enraged by Palin’s success that he actually fired a shotgun round into his television, triggering a 15-hour standoff with Wisconsin cops.

According to a criminal complaint, Cowan’s wife called police Monday evening to report that her husband had blasted the TV and was threatening to kill himself. Cowan, who had been drinking, became angry while watching Palin, 20, perform on the ABC program.

A Feminist Film About Equal Pay for Women: 'Made in Dagenham' (Video)

Perhaps this British film about the 1960s struggle for women's rights, which led to the British Equal Pay Act, will spark a discussion about why we still don't have equal pay in the UK or here in the USA. And no, merely permitting women to sue, aka Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, is not good enough.

Gawd only knows how long we'll have to wait to get feminist films like this made here in the U.S., but I'm sure that when they eventually arrive, men will star in them.

It’s a purely feminist film that feels like a combination of Milk and Mad Men—an honest look at the role of women in the ’60s, working overtime, cooking supper, fighting for civil rights and getting the kids off to school while their husbands sleep on the couch. It’s a film that blatantly condemns sexism and shows, despite its mostly light tone, the real cost of fighting for civil rights.

Liberals Sue Arianna Huffington for Stealing Website Ideas

Amazing. The well-credentialed progressives Peter Daou (who was Hillary Clinton's internet campaign person in 2008) and James Boyce have filed a lawsuit against Arianna Huffington for stealing their detailed written proposal for a liberal website and using it to create Huffington Post:

Peter Daou and James Boyce charge that Huffington and partner Ken Lerer designed the website from a plan they had presented them, and in doing so, violated a handshake agreement to work together, according to a lawsuit to be filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan. “Huffington has styled herself as a ‘new media’ maven and an expert on the effective deployment of news and celebrity on the Internet in the service of political ends,” says the complaint. . .

"They presented the ‘new media’ ideas and plans of Peter Daou and James Boyce as their own in order to raise money for the website and enhance their image, and breached their promises to work with Peter and James to develop the site together.”

Krugman: Obama Still Not A Fighter

Quote of the Day

[T]he main reason Mr. Obama finds himself in this situation is that two years ago he was not, in fact, prepared to deal with the world as he was going to find it. And it seems as if he still isn’t. . . [T]he real question was whether Mr. Obama could change his tune when he ran into the partisan firestorm everyone who remembered the 1990s knew was coming. He could do uplift — but could he fight? So far the answer has been no.

It's also true that Obama sold his post-partisan campaign crap on the premise that the Clintons caused the partisan warfare of the 1990s. Little wonder he is so unprepared for the "partisan firestorm" that everyone except Obama and the very young knew was coming. Shorter version: Pay no attention to Obama's denials. Like Axelrod said, Obama will cave on the Bush tax cuts.

The Sky Will Open

"Maybe I've just lived a little long, but I have no illusions about how hard this is going to be."
