The crazed womb-envy brigade of Tennessee lawmakers is at it again. The right-wing dream bill of removing abortion rights from the state constitution -- aka SJR127 -- has become an annual event in the Tennessee legislature. So far it has been killed every year, but this year, in an apparent plot to get women to leave the state, Republicans rule both Houses.
The Tennessee Women's Political Caucus advises:
On the Senate side, please note that SJR127, also a resolution calling for a state constitutional change related to the right to an abortion, has been recently filed and is the first bill on the calendar for the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting at 1:00 on March 11. (This committee meets in room 12 at the legislative plaza..)
Tomorrow's 3:00 p.m. legislative hearing in room 16 at the Legislative Plaza features some 13 would be laws dealing with reproductive rights, or the patriarchal custom of male-dominated state control of women's bodies. Please attend the hearing if at all possible!
This email alert is from Planned Parenthood Middle and East Tennessee:
Well, here we go again. A hearing has been scheduled for this WEDNESDAY at 3:00pm in Legislative Plaza Room 16. For this hearing, more than HJR61 & 66 are on the table. There are 13, that's right 13, bills and/or resolutions up for debate.
From bills that would limit access to affordable birth control and institute a "waiting period" for abortion to removing Constitutional privacy rights that protect the right to abortion, these bills/resolutions are nasty, uncaring and anti-woman (see for yourself when you click to take action!).
Please . . take action and tell your elected official that you are pro-choice and that you expect their votes to represent you.
Examples:
HJR 0066 JUDICIARY: Constitution - right to abortion.
Adds new provision to Article I to provide that nothing in Constitution of Tennessee secures or protects right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. (H: Maggart)
HB0819 - HEALTH CARE: Death certificate to be issued for abortions.
Requires a death certificate to be filed with the office of vital records for each abortion performed in the state. Requires death certificate to state that the fetal death was due to an abortion. (S: Bunch; H: Campfield)
