Steve Cohen (D-TN): Cheney Impeachment Measure Still Alive

After the Kucinich resolution to impeach Dick Cheney was sent to the House Judiciary Committee, many assumed it was dead on arrival. Speaker Pelosi and Leader Steny said as much. But Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen says the resolution to impeach Cheney is alive and kicking!

Rep. Stephen I. Cohen (D-Tenn.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, predicts that the panel will hold hearings. "I get that impression," he said. "The issue is still alive."

Cohen is a co-sponsor of the Kucinich resolution, which has three impeachment articles against Cheney. All told, 14 Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee, including the chairman, Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), initially voted with Kucinich, signaling some level of impeachment interest on the panel. . .

A statement from the committee indicated that the panel is "very busy" with other issues, but it added that the "committee staff should continue to consider, as a preliminary matter, the many abuses of this Administration, including the Vice President."

There are six co-sponsors of Kucinich's impeachment resolution on the Judiciary Committee: Maxine Waters (D-California), Hank Johnson (D-Georgia), Keith Ellison (D-Minnesota), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin), Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee) and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas).

In an email sent to his constituents, Rep. Wexler (D-FL), of the House Judiciary Committee, says he will urge the Committee to defy House leadership and hold hearings immediately:

I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months. Only through hearings can we bring begin to correct the abuses of Dick Cheney and the Bush Administration; and, if it is determined in these hearings that Vice President Cheney has committed High Crimes and Misdemeanors, he should be impeached and removed from office. It is time for Congress to expose the multitude of misdeeds of the Administration, and I am hopeful that the Judiciary Committee will expeditiously begin an investigation of this matter.

Meteor Blades at dkos has the list and the contact info for the Congress members who need to hear from you. Unlike Pelosi and Steny, the majority of Americans do want Bush/Cheney to be held accountable for their crimes via impeachment. To date, Bush and Cheney are getting pretty well everything they want from the spineless Democratic Congress. This is one thing the Dems can give them that they don't want!

It's not up to Congress, it's up to we the people.
